I have a dell laptop and it has 8 Gb of ram and 1.80ghz processor DDR3 good graphics card and all that , I was wondering if it is possible to run a Mining rig on it , im getting some bitcoin miners from amazon soon so inform me as best as you can, thanks

Mining is now the reserve of huge industrial operations with millions invested in hardware, property and backing. The last time anyone could do anything with a laptop was 2009/ 2010. Graphics cards lasted until 2011/12. Even dedicated bitcoin miners will be dwarfed if operated solo these days.

There might well be bitcoin alternatives that you could mine. You could exchange them for bitcoin at an exchange. I'm not sure which alt coins there are that fit the bill but some quick googling should suffice.

First mining with laptop is not recommend.  It is not made for the intensity and 24x7 use.  It will shorten the life of most laptops.

Second I am sad to say GPU/CPU mining is pretty much done.  If you look at electricity use vs what you make most of the time you will lose money.

It is good you are looking at miners.  I suggest getting a asic if you want to mine BTC.   Keep in mine chances are you can get it cheaper from manufacture or ebay then amazon (most of time not all).

You can attach an ASIC to it and make some profits. However, it would consume some energy. You are better off purchasing a raspberry pi since it only uses about 5-6 watts and does the job just fine.

no, don't use it for that, instead you use it for a bitcoin node to help the network, and you can turn it also into something like a "personal bank", don't surf the web and don't download anything, just run the client

it should turn in a pretty safe wallet

Running a full node would be the best option, trying to mine is not going to be worth it, wasting time and energy and never contributing to the blockchain.

Ok so pretty much as i had thought its recommended a desktop. Thanks for the help , i will be getting a desktop, but does it matter what type of desktop ? If so give suggestions.

Definitely don’t try to mine cryptocurrencies on a laptop, and if you’re thinking of it for a GPU on a desktop, all you’re going to do is run up an electricity bill and shorten your hardware’s life.

A desktop isn't quite going to cut it any more. I suggest buying something like this instead.

if you really are interested in mining coins, you can take a look at the altcoin section of forum to find some altcoin to mine; i personally don't like mining but you can try it for yourself

Im not recommend if you mining with laptop, if you really want to mining with your laptop try altcoin: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=160.0 mining bitcoin with your GPU is not worth anymore, you must buy some hardware or build a mining farm.

A desktop isn't quite going to cut it any more. I suggest buying something like this instead.

Even with a desktop chances are you lose money.  Add up electricity compared to alt coins you mine.   Most are at a loss (unless very very low electricity).

I suggest looking into Asics if you want to mine.  They just so efficient you cannot compete against them with standard gear anymore.

You would end up losing money, even with a gpu.  Your better of buying a bitcoin miner and even then its not the best idea if electricity costs alot.  I wanted to buy a bitcoin miner but ended up forcing myself not to because it was to much of a risk and I might never see a return/break even.

He is going to be pluging in miners to the laptop not mining with the laptop. And to Op as long as your internet connection is good enough the your laptop should be good enough to plug the miners into until you get your desktop. I would not really recommend dumping money in to mining hardware but if you want to do it for fun then all the power to you!

You are very right man, i'm gonna be plugging in miners to my laptop, not mining with my laptop haha , and i have super fast internet, very stable, 24/7 internet and all that, but yeah you're correct man

Hmm, if you're planning to mine bitcoins directly from those hardware, I strongly advise you to not execute your plan. You'll end up paying your power bill higher than it was before and may end up getting a burned-out rig. Mining operations are profitable for those who have enough $$$ to buy the most advanced hardware and operate in a large scale. For the solo miners, it is a downhill road to lost your investment. Mining bitcoins with such hardware are profitable back in 2009-10, but as of today, I don't think you'll even make 1 bitcoin within a span of 2 years.

Well if  you still want to continue mining, try searching for an altcoin that has some promising features that may be successful and might come out in exchanges. Try holding on some large amounts (and I suggest you to mine it when it still has low difficulty) and release those coins into an exchange whenever you think that you already have a good profit from it.

Exactly - For me a watt costs .16 cents.  I talked to a friend who mines in his home from Canada...pays .06 cents because of hydro electric plants...so jealous
