I need a tool that would trace large wallets for bitcoins (and dogecoins) through the blockchain. Is there an online service which does just that (and sorts the wallets by the amount in them)? Or should I program it myself if there is none?

there are block explorers that do exactly that what you describe. most of them are altcoin related but it can be done for bitcoin too.
look at chainz.cryptoid.info also look at bitcoinrichlist.com

Could you please post a link to one of them that does exactly what I need (actually, two, for bitcoin and dogecoin)?

See you added a link, now testing. It seems there are neither btc nor doge there, by the first link. The second is the thing (for bitcoins)!

bitcoinrichlist.com is fake. The three top addresses from the top100 hold as reported by bitcoinrichlist.com:

19KJZ5aqWnrrCaNAS5Pbd4uknPFBxjALRt - 167,784
1Jz6HEKNJpYjXAYRLn49QUUUrizL5qGxjM - 157,997
18vo26nEeDt1Tw17CuWap3F5rKJjBXSMmL - 115,000

I looked in the blockchain.info for these addresses and there is only dust there...

I can suggest you this site : http://www.walletexplorer.com/  but I think they can trace only bitcoin and not the other altcoins (try and tell me if you have find what that you were searching).

Okay, these links seem to be valid, checked doges, in which I'm even more interested than in bitcoins right now... Thanks a lot!

if i were you i would follow where the coins are distributed, its easy and very fast to keep track of it. you would know if the person had many btc address on his name or only one. or when small payments are made, probably he is selling coins

I don't quite understand what you mean. How can I keep track where the coins are distributed?

It is not very convenient since it doesn't show wallets without any grouping at all. And yes, they can only trace bitcoins. For now I'm quite happy with what bitinfocharts.com does...

I still don't get how are you supossed to know what is inside someone's wallet.dat or whatever, if all you can know is transactions of individual addresses that may or not may pertain to a single wallet.

It all depends upon your needs and ends. Personally, I don't care at all what's inside someone's wallet.dat. I just need to keep an eye on big whales' money, that is, when they begin spending it beyond what they do on a daily basis...
