It's depend on what do You want to mine.
If You mining Digitalcoin example You need around 120Mh/s@X11 or 500Mh@Scrypt or 10Th@SHA for 1000DGC.
120Mh/s@X11 is around 20*R9 280/7950 vga cards.
10Th/s@SHA is around 20*Antminer S3
