Encrypted Jabber Communication

After a discussion with a friend, I wanted to find an encrypted chat solution. I came across Psi, an open source Jabber client that supports OpenPGP encryption.

I have to say, I love it. The user interface is very minimal, I find it much more pleasing than Pidgin. It's easy to set up but there appear to be lots of advanced settings. It was trivial to get it running over Tor with polipo, and OpenPGP integration is very nice.

You can use the UI to register a new account on any Jabber server, or use an existing account. Here's how to set it up for Google chat.

Am I understanding correctly that this supports encryption from one client to the other, without the server being able to decrypt? That would be really cool.

Yes, it supports the use of GPG for end to end encryption. If have each other's private key you can talk over google chat without google being able to see what you're saying. It is very nice!

You mean you have eachother's public key. I use Pidgin+OTR for my encrypted chats.

OTR is much better than PGP/GPG when using via IM, because you got two extra features: Deniability and forward secrecy.

    The messages you send do not have digital signatures that are checkable by a third party. Anyone can forge messages after a conversation to make them look like they came from you. However, during a conversation, your correspondent is assured the messages he sees are authentic and unmodified.

Perfect forward secrecy

I wasn't aware of those benefits, thank you. I've switched back to Pidgin which supports OTR.
