From Ross Ulbrichts journal (late 2011):

"Around this time, Variety Jones showed up. This was the biggest and strongest willed character I had met through the site thus far. He quickly proved to me that he had value by pointing out a major security hole in the site I was unaware of. It was an attack on bitcoind."

What type of attack was he refering to?

(More about Variety Jones here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=935434.0 )

It's also mentioned in the pleading of his lawyers. I think it is part of the defense and there is no real background behind the bitcoind attack statement.

This was not just a tactic from the defense , but it came from his journal, that was found on his computer. So at least Ross Ulbricht has beeing convinced about that possible bitcoind security leak. This story was the entry point for Variety Jones to get the admin job at Silk Road.

Here's the CVE page.
CVE-2011-4447 might be a good candidate but it's just a guess.
