Not sure if it's still true today but a while ago, the number of bot accounts actually outnumbered the genuine accounts:

http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=934827

And having so many useless accounts on a forum can in fact make the database large. Not sure about SMF but back when I managed a phpBB board, it was definitely the case.

Most of that discussion centers around spambot accounts but farmed accounts for selling are almost certainly a part of this mix.

hilariousandco said that he nuked about 20-30 accounts in one day during the last wave of bots so it's probably fair to assume that 50 or more bot accounts were being made daily. An account farmer might have 10 or 20 accounts under his control. Bot accounts are also pretty distinguishable from farmed accounts since they tend to add spammy links to their profile or use formulaic or nonsensical usernames (e.g. I once encountered a bot that would always name its accounts by getting a common first name and appending the name of a US state to the end so for example: JohnTexas, MikeAlabama, AliceCalifornia)

And if the account makes even just one post, then it quickly becomes obvious whether it's a bot or a human.

Dear GOD/GODS and/or anyone else who can HELP ME (e.g. MEMBERS OF SUPER-INTELLIGENT ALIEN CIVILIZATIONS): The next time I wake up, please change my physical form to that of FINN MCMILLAN of SOUTH NEW BRIGHTON at 8 YEARS OLD and keep it that way FOREVER. I am so sick of this chubby Asian man body! Thank you! - CHAUL JHIN KIM (a.k.a. A DESPERATE SOUL) P.S. If anyone is reading this then please pray for me! [ www.chauljhin.com ]

I guess you're right.  I haven't actually tried to figure out which accounts on here are farmed.  I had assumed that account farmers would be using scripts but perhaps you're correct that they're doing things "the old-fashoned way".

Very interesting this all. And for me a lot of new vocabulary to learn (english is not my first language)
Account farmer! Never heard it before, but i understand exactly what it means Smiley

Today i found a farmed account, because he wrote a post behind me! (I believe not without a reason...)
I was wondering about his post, so i checked the profile. I saw the recent posts and found out that he post mostly 14 times on a single day, then he is inactive for minimum two weeks or longer.
I found also out that he probably acts on more accounts in exactly the same way. That's why he s a framer.
And if i am right, then i think this person calls himself trusted escrow! I don't like this, maybe he deals with himself and give trust feedback in the same way. And I would never trust a person who spam a lot of threads from many different accounts, maybe also/only for the own success/profit.

See here what i wrote about the account and what i found out about his posting history.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=653271.msg11280915#msg11280915

And further i believe somehow, some threads with nearly the same topic or simple topics which are simple to answer, are created only to increase the post activity from users in signature campaigns, to raise the profits somehow. I saw threads, especially in newbie and meta which are created by a account, but it seems this accounts was only online to create a thread. It is strange somehow that a user ask for example, for a simple way to get bitcoin, but never is online to talk about this. The same i think about some threads where users ask for faucets...

I once made 20 accounts using a single IP and never once had any trouble. If there is a limit at all, then I doubt any normal user would reach it.

Try hitting 50 with same IP

Interesting , So these account farmers really go to that much trouble of making new accounts and posting every 14 days ?

Who has marked a lot of accounts with a negative trust feedback in january, for "running a ponzi"?
Who has marked in the same way accounts and called them "scammer" of the loaning section of the forum?
How did he found out this all?

For me it's no wonder, now i see a lot a of farmed accounts are posting in the gambling section of the forum! (On a other thread where QS escrowed a scam signatur campaign for a scam ponzi website, i wrote there already "loaning and gambling go hand in hand, they profit from each other")

Interesting detective work man, I wonder how many of these are being farmed by Quickseller/ACCTSeller.  Hopefully the mods are doing nukes on these accounts as this kind of behavior is clearly spam.

Thanks man Smiley
I have already experience with this kind of stuff. I analyzed fake accounts in a other forum/community before i came here.
I watch at details which most users not see at the first view.

And there are a lot more accounts which show this structure of post history! Not only the few examples from my post above.
Unfortunately i can't research them all, i have not enough time and money to do this. And the admins have a better resources/tools than me. They can check IP addresses to compare accounts and posts. This way they can see if they are all produced by the same "farmer".
My first impression is, they are all from the same!

I think, the time will show how interested the administration is to do something against this farming. If they do nothing, then the accounts could be made by the admins also! As a way to profit from the forum. And who knows, who is QS? It could be possible that this is a second identity or private account of a Admin.

You know, we have a guy who made trust ratings for all the coin devs. But is there also a guy who test the most popular accounts here? Such as admins, sellers, escrows of this forum... The trust feedback of the forum is easy to manipulate, a second opinion would be the best!

But for now, lets wait and watch how much effort the administration shows to support the own rules. Because i think, i read somewhere "account farming is not allowed".
And if the administration should need some kind of help to research this, I wouldn't say no...

What evidence do you have that links him to Quickseller exactly (assuming that's who you're referring to)? Quickseller was knowledgeable of the rules here and that guy clearly isn't because a) he doesn't seem to be aware that you only need to make 1 post per fortnight and not spam quickly to make 14, and 2) Quickseller always made decent posts and didn't 'farm' them this way.

But for now, lets wait and watch how much effort the administration shows to support the own rules. Because i think, i read somewhere "account farming is not allowed".

You can own/create/farm/buy/sell/lend as many accounts as you wish, just as long as you make decent posts/contributions from them.

What are you talking about? I think most people on here believe in the free market and people who participate in this kind of activity is doing nothing more then taking advantage of the market.

This is also ironic that you are creating so many accounts making shit/troll posts arguing against account farming while the reason you are allowed to create so many accounts is because of these rules.

The reason people can buy/sell/farm accounts is because the forum believes in the right to freedom of speech. The forum wants people to be protected if/when they make an unpopular statement (or in your case to look like an idiot). If the rules regarding multiple accounts were to be removed then you would be breaking the rules by creating accounts in the way that you are (this is of course ignoring the fact that you are breaking the rules by posting for reasons other to appeal your ban after you have been banned multiple times).

Nonsense. There is zero need to buy an account to speak. This account was neither bought nor sold. It was made by clicking on the "register" button.
Case in point.
Trotting out freedom of speech to defend your profiteering on this forum is fucking repulsive.
Stop.

It pains me to provide you this opportunity to make a few "relevant" posts with an account you're farming, but so it goes Sad

The fact that the forum believes in the freedom of speech means that people can have as many accounts as they wish. The trading of accounts is not against any rules, and the restriction of the sale of accounts would violate the forums policy of having a free market. The community at large generally believes that the pros outweigh the cons of the trading of accounts and generally finds this practice acceptable and as a result it is done in the open.

No. Freedom of speech does not mean that people can have multiple accounts. That's nonsense.

"Free market" doesn't mean what you think it does. This forum does not allow the sale of guns, drugs, child porn, or fake IDs.
IRL fake IDs. Selling forum fake IDs is merely "discouraged," but allowed. Don't make it right or smart.
Doing bad things against which no laws exists is pretty much the definition of an asshole, so there's that.

"The community at large"? Is that what you're calling yourself? Outside of the [highly vocal because paid to post] account dealers/farmers, no one does.
So drop the bombastic rhetoric bro, you're a petty swindler.

It's a good job you don't make laws or rules around here. Selling forum accounts isn't against any laws nor does everyone think it's bad. Just because you think something is bad or amoral doesn't mean everyone else does, so drop the petty trolling.

It's a good job you don't make laws or rules around here. Selling forum accounts isn't against any laws nor does everyone think it's bad. Just because you think something is bad or amoral doesn't mean everyone else does, so drop the petty trolling.

The last thing this thread needs is some sycophant posting snippy comments. Yes, I know that account selling " isn't against any laws," that's why I'm posting this in the meta sections rather than scam accusations.
Rules aren't static, they change. Hopefully for the better. This process can't take place if people ignore the bad rules & STFU.

Its strange though isnt it. It seems its the same person behind all these accounts complaining, sounding like a broken record. The fact that you seek protection by the rule you deem bad has been pointed out several times. Still new accounts keep poping up, none providing any new arguments, just the same old "QS so bad". The only fruitful discussion with Salty is probably long forgotten and instead of staying on the level that might actually convince someone, more trolling.

Im not really here, its just your imagination.

[] The fact that you seek protection by the rule you deem bad has been pointed out several times. []

And several times I've replied:
Buying and selling accounts has nothing to do with being able to start a brand new one. Which this one is. It was neither bought nor sold.
How is it you still manage to miss that?

After Quickseller posted with his alt, ACCTSeller, that there are no rules against selling forum accounts, I replied with "This is why we can't have nice things." Quickseller wanted to vent, and so he did. I've explained to him, again, why he's an ass.
Some folks need to hear shit many times before they catch on, I don't hold that against them & oblige.
Get it? 'Coz I'll explain it again, I don't mind.

Now either explain how I "seek protection by the rule [ I ] deem bad," or stop shitting up this thread.

Your reason to have an alt is different from the reaons of others. Reasons that are not necessarily malicious. E.g. earning money from ones posts. IIRC Salty even gave a good explanations why signature campaigns in a sense make scams with "trusted" accounts (as in higher rank as well as in trading feedback received) more difficult and expensive.

With alt accounts essentially comes the trade with accounts. IMHO you cant have one without the other. If I am allowed to have a second account why should I not be allowed to use the 17th account of someone else. An account they no longer need or want. Since building an account takes time its only natural that I pay a certain amount for the time someone else invested in the account.

The reason might be as simple as Im spoiled and I dont want to be hindered by the limitations of a new account.

Yes, bought accounts might get used to scam someone, but thats true regardless if there is a rule against it or not. "Self-made" alt accounts can be used for scams as well. You either limit every person to a single account or they will get traded.

How do you suggest to solve this problem in a way that is decreasing the chance of successful scams? By an admin saying in some thread that its bad?

Im not really here, its just your imagination.
