Seeing that op_return is going to be 80bytes soon on the next update.. Would it be possible to put in torrent files into the blockchain to create a decentralized piratebay?

i noticed that these guys got it up and running to host torrent files on the blockchain, but i rather have it on bitcoin instead. possible?

Since community members have been so kind to offer a bounty for a torrents plugin, I went to work on it right away. Almost all the things you can see below are already working, but there are still some important things missing, like the local signing of transactions, so I can't release it for testing quite yet.

As you can see, it's possible to get some additional info on torrents. This includes seeder/leecher numbers (obtained from getstrike.net) and "FakeSkan" from bitsnoop.com. With this info you'll know whether a torrent is active and whether it's a fake. These external requests are only made after manual action by the user.

Filename and mime type are automatically detected when selecting a local file.

That would be one more thing for the anti-Bitcoin people to complain about. I don't think that would be a good idea at all.

No way. Torrents files, movies or MP3s are too big. And you cannot insert a file in the blockchain.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

You don't need to store the files themselves, only seeds, which usually are pretty small.

Even if it is just the magnet link , I don't think bitcoin should be used this way. It is more for a role of Storj or maidsafe.

Actually you only need the magnetic link.

No one can define how or for what bitcoin is used, if there's people willing to put torrents on the blockchain and other people wants to get them from there, it will be done.

The Streamium guys are doing something like what you are talking about.  Not bittorrent but close.

https://github.com/streamium/paystream

Sorry, misread, as others have pointed out, storj or madesafe is what you are after.

OK, I have read through the NXT forum thread.
It seems that what you are suggesting already exists.

Why do you want to mess up the blockchain with pirate software, movies, etc?
Can't we find better uses for this wonderful gift that Satoshi has bestowed upon us?

Well, since bitcoin´s persistent problem is meager trading volume and about comatose buying interest I can´t see how this would hurt. Any publicity would seem to be good.

Aren't torrents already decentralized? I think we should keep these things seperate and not try bloat the blockchain, but I think its good if the blockchain technology influences things like this, but again, should be kept seperate.

No way. Torrents files, movies or MP3s are too big. And you cannot insert a file in the blockchain.

I think he's on about the actual torrent file download which is tiny, not what you're actually attempting to download.

Torrent tracker directories  aren't decentralized yet.
They are referring to putting magnet links so bitcoin essentially becomes a torrent tracker. namecoin or another blockchain would be better suited for this but nothing can stop someone using bitcoin either.

I don't think that is such a good idea.
It will attract trouble towards Bitcoin.
You don't want all the recording/software/gaming studios requesting measures against it because of copyright infringement.

Leave the blockchain as it is.
Use torrents like you have so far.
There is nothing broken there so don't try to fix it.

Changes to blockchain are inevitable. We need progress. Fork need to be updated, confirmation times theoretically could be updated etc. If you are suggesting that we have final form of blockchain already and nothing could be done you are mistaken. But I agree that trying to add to blockchain questionable features like torrents are not wise even if it could be added easily.

The Bitcoin Blockchain itself is an implementation of the technology.
One does not need to bloat the Bitcoin Blockchain with whatever carp they wish.
They can easily create their own Blockchain which will be specifically for that purpose.

Besides, who would wait a day or so to download 40GB of Blockchain data, just to download a torrent seed?

It's just plain stupid.
Don't you think?

yea i didnt account for that 40gb download...

i think nxt actually has that down with pruning the data every 2 weeks to reduce the bloat and selective nodes can choose to archive the data and turn off pruning. concept seems plausible until they release it on mainnet. i wonder how storj and maidsafe is accomplishing the bloat issue?
