WASHINGTON (AP) -- Since at least 2007, the FBI has been able to recognize the voice of Elton Simpson - one of the men suspected in the Texas shootings outside a contest featuring cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad.

Agents heard the young man from Phoenix talk about fighting nonbelievers for Allah. About plans to travel to South Africa and link up with "brothers" in Somalia. About using school as a cover story for traveling overseas.

Simpson was arrested in 2010, one day before authorities say he planned to leave for South Africa. But despite more than 1,500 hours of recorded conversations, the government prosecuted him on only one minor charge - lying to a federal agent. Years spent investigating Simpson for terrorism ties resulted in three years of probation. He also was ordered to pay $600 in fines and court fees.

Sad thing is with more of these shootings you're going to see more statistics that rack up on the side of those against gun control, the reason there wasn't any before is there weren't people stupid and crazy enough to attack an armed populace, why do you think military bases so rarely get hit? In other news, more surveillance overreach and discrimination is pushing people to convert to Islam who then use these guys as human time bombs, who'd have thought it?

If anybody happens to glance through this thread don't even think about joining these Jihadists, they don't give a shit about you, no matter how bad life gets it's not worth siding with these assholes.

Simpson and Soofi were wearing body armor, and one shot the security officer in the leg. Garland police spokesman Joe Harn said Monday that a single Garland police officer subdued the two gunmen but that after his initial shots, SWAT officers nearby also fired at the two men. Harn said police don't know who fired the lethal shots.

The security officer was treated for his injury at a hospital and released.

Sounds like another great line from a snobby liberal. Free speech or the 1st Amendment is there to protect the worst forms of speech, not just shooting the breeze over the weather.

This is how ridiculous this whole thing is, me and BaDecker actually agree on this issue that freedom of speech is for everything, when me and fucking BaDecker completely agree on something then you know the people on the opposite side are delusional, next I'll be agreeing with an Authoritarian Communist on freedom of speech. It's not the people who are drawing the cartoon that should be ostracised, it's the people who will get so enraged over a fucking drawing that they'll go out and kill people that should be lectured, but they have guns, so of course these fucking idiots won't go near them because they're cowards.

Good for the police that took them down.  Makes me proud of law enforcement officers for stuff like this.  Too bad there is so many other officers who can't seem to do their job right.  Perfect world it's not but way better than hunter/gather :-)

one of the shooters has been found to have posted about the shooting beforehand on Twitter
The guy makes some comments about becoming part of the Mujahideen and serving Allah, then ended with a #garlandshooting or something like that.

Here's "my" drawing of Muhammad (and every other human being past/present/future). "My" lack of artistic talent offends me more than anyone else could possibly be.

I have a feeling that the NRA will have a field day with this sometime in the future to proclaim the benefits of Gun ownership and the NSA the value of call logs sort of
A bad guy with a gun can be beaten by a good guy with a gun look at Dallas
We have all this information to point him out as a threat, it was the fault of someone that he slipped through our surveillance and was prosecuted with only a minor crime despite the evidence of his intent.
That said I'm glad they were stopped before this became another serious shooting incident.

As a side note the sponsor for this contest has a strong relation to another thread here as mentioned above but not as directly.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/05/04/why-a-woman-named-pamela-geller-organized-a-prophet-muhammad-cartoon-contest/
For those unfamiliar with Pamela Geller, she was in the news a few weeks ago for sponsoring an ad campaign across major U.S. cities with anti-Muslim posters saying, among other things, “Killing Jews is Worship that draws us close to Allah.”

That is kind of interesting since it looks like it came back full circle.

There should be one of these in every major city every weekend as bait, with every civilian invited and those working security required to wear body armor and carry guns. Let anti-1A fanatics meet their own firing squads. And in case anyone tries to fire an RPG at the location, put building armor up like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JOXrpCLCJg or whatever they use to fortify green zone buildings, and snipe the RPG bastards.

deport these savages already

Be radical, have principles, be absolute, be that which the bourgeoisie calls an extremist: give yourself without counting or calculating, don't accept what they call ‘the reality of life' and act in such a way that you won't be accepted by that kind of ‘life', never abandon the principle of struggle.

I'm usually pretty reticent about these types of situations. Like, freedom of speech is great, but one needn't poke a hornets nest. Usually...
The more this shit blows up, the more I'm starting to feel that reticence is just admitting defeat. I could go and say all sorts of disrespectful, even "sacreligous" things to any other faith (yes faith, it's not a racial trait you know) and I could guarantee I would not get murdered. I'd probably lose my job and get threats online, but I'd be pretty safe.
There's something wrong with these lunatics. When you think about it, religion offers so little. Why die over it? Makes me think they just want an excuse to go postal, and this is the most convenient
Can't the states instal a puppet Ayhatohlah or whoever it is tells these lunatics what to think, and have him tell everybody to chill the fuck out and that Allah don't give one fuck about some stupid cartoons.
You would think that "God" himself would have better things to do than get upset by some goofy humans?
Makes me sick though...

Wow! How surprising... :/
Draw some cartoons about Muhammad, make some noise around it, get a few pissed off but not very smart muslim youngsters with guns, shot them (dead people tend not to be talkative), then make more noise about the horrific terrorist attack, impose more surveillance over the scared public and/or take some of their liberties and rights as a "sacrifice for our glorious war on terror". Rinse, repeat...

Piss Christ

Piss Christ is a 1987 photograph by the American artist and photographer Andres Serrano. It depicts a small plastic crucifix submerged in a glass of the artist's urine. The piece was a winner of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art's "Awards in the Visual Arts" competition,[1] which was sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, a United States Government agency that offers support and funding for artistic projects, without controlling content.

The photograph is of a small plastic crucifix submerged in what appears to be a yellow liquid. The artist has described the substance as being his own urine in a glass.[2][3] The photograph was one of a series of photographs that Serrano had made that involved classical statuettes submerged in various fluids—milk, blood, and urine.[4] The full title of the work is Immersion (Piss Christ).[5][6] The photograph is a 60-by-40-inch (150 by 100 cm) Cibachrome print. It is glossy and its colors are deeply saturated. The presentation is that of a golden, rosy medium including a constellation of tiny bubbles. Without Serrano specifying the substance to be urine and without the title referring to urine by another name, the viewer would not necessarily be able to differentiate between the stated medium of urine and a medium of similar appearance, such as amber or polyurethane.[7]

Serrano has not ascribed overtly political content to Piss Christ and related artworks, on the contrary stressing their ambiguity. He has also said that while this work is not intended to denounce religion, it alludes to a perceived commercializing or cheapening of Christian icons in contemporary culture.[8]

The art critic Lucy R. Lippard has presented a constructive case for the formal value of Serrano's Piss Christ, which she characterizes as mysterious and beautiful.[7] She writes that the work is "a darkly beautiful photographic image… the small wood and plastic crucifix becomes virtually monumental as it floats, photographically enlarged, in a deep rosy glow that is both ominous and glorious." Lippard suggests that the formal values of the image can be regarded separately from other meanings.[9]

The Holy Virgin Mary

The Holy Virgin Mary is a painting created by Chris Ofili in 1996. It was one of the works included in the Sensation exhibition in London, Berlin and New York in 1997–2000. The subject of the work, and its execution, caused considerable controversy in New York, with Rudolph Giuliani – then Mayor of New York City – describing Ofili's work as "sick".[1]

On a yellow-orange background, the large painting (8 feet high by 6 feet wide) depicts a black woman wearing a blue robe, a traditional attribute of the Virgin Mary. The work employs mixed media, including oil paint, glitter, and polyester resin, and also elephant dung and collaged pornographic images. The central Black Madonna is surrounded by many collaged images that resemble butterflies at first sight, but on closer inspection are photographs of female genitalia; an ironic reference to the putti that appear in traditional religious art. A lump of dried, varnished elephant dung forms one bared breast, and the painting is displayed leaning against the gallery wall, supported by two other lumps of elephant dung, decorated with coloured pins: the pins on the left are arranged to spell out "Virgin" and the one on the right "Mary". Many other works by Ofili in this period – including No Woman No Cry – incorporate elephant dung, particularly as supports for the canvas, inspired by a period that Ofili spent in Zimbabwe.[2]

The mixture of the sacred (Virgin Mary) and the profane (excrement and pornography) became a cause of controversy when the Sensation exhibition moved to New York in 1999. The City of New York and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani brought a court case against the Brooklyn Museum, with Giuliani describing the exhibition of Ofili's work as "sick" and "disgusting". Giuliani attempted to withdraw the annual $7 million City Hall grant from the museum, and threatened it with eviction. The museum resisted Giuliani's demands, and its director, Arnold L. Lehman, filed a federal lawsuit against Giuliani for a breach of the First Amendment. The museum eventually won the court case.[3]

Giuliani was reported as claiming that Ofili had thrown elephant dung at a painting of the Virgin Mary: "The idea of having so-called works of art in which people are throwing elephant dung at a picture of the Virgin Mary is sick."[4] The press also reported that the painting was "smeared", "splattered" or "stained" with dung.[5][6] Ofili, raised as a Roman Catholic commented that "elephant dung in itself is quite a beautiful object."[7] Other people doubted about the sincerity of these explanations, such as Carol Becker, who commented: "One has to question the sincerity of an artist like Chris Ofili, who in interviews presented the Holy Virgin Mary as nothing that should offend".[8]

The work was protected by a plexiglass screen, but was damaged when Dennis Heiner smeared white paint over the canvas on 16 December 1999. Heiner was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, and received a conditional discharge and a $250 fine. Scott LoBaido, an artist from Staten Island, was arrested on 30 September 1999 for throwing horse manure at the museum. He accused Chris Ofili's work of "Catholic bashing". Museum guards protecting the painting were quoted as saying: "It's not the Virgin Mary. It's a painting."[9]

Ofili's work caused less of a stir in the exhibition's London in 1997 or in Berlin in 1998. A planned exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra in 2000 was cancelled after the US controversy.

The painting was bought by David Walsh in 2007. It was included in Ofili's mid-career retrospective at Tate Britain in 2010.[1][10] As of 2011, it is exhibited at Walsh's Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, Tasmania – the largest private art museum in the Southern Hemisphere.[11]

Wasn't it Charles Manson's plan to incite a race war, then when the dust settles he would emerge to rule the land due to the fact he thought none of the blacks, who he figured would win, were smart enough to lead themselves?

This lady is an opportunist, she knows full well she is inciting, fomenting even, hatred and radicalized violence. I cant see that there was any other point behind this art show but to cause an altercation. Honestly, she should have to answer for that shit, at least a little, a fine, or some community service (lol) but seriously, in some parts of the world, democratic places that value free speech, certain types of insulting and degrading speech are not allowed by law. Its called "hate speech" and even though I'm no fan of radical Islamists, I think its wiser to back off when you know someone's a little too sensitive in some areas. Like do you walk around South Central LA shouting "NIgger!" in the face of every gang-banger you see? of course not. Now do you feel your freedom of speech has been compromised? I do! I think everyone who disagrees with me is a coward and a bad citizen of America if they don't immediately go down to your local ghetto and shout racial epithets at everyone you see. Also Jews. Make sure everyone on social media knows you hate Jews. See you in the unemployment line.
