Ok, so I have no idea what is going on, but who is this pirate guy and what did he do? Also, why is it so important?

My summary:
After months of waiting we were made privy to an IRC chat with the "pirateat40" and it turns out:

(drumroll please)
Apparently he likes some show called "breaking bad".

I checked it out.
Super-lame AMA and Govt. control freak vetted production glorifying stupidity and prohibition.

Author's very first post.

I will be finishing up a pirate game called http://constantsail.com soon . It is web based and you can capture other players ships in pvp battles.

I'll be accepting payments in bitcoins for full membership. Let me know if you would be interested in playing.

A later post.

What web games do people know of that accept Bitcoin?

I just created this game for Ludum Dare game competition:
http://constantsail.com/

You can upgrade your account to have unlimited ships in your fleet using paypal or bitcoin.

Game Description:

Constant Sail is a real-time web-based massive multiplayer online pirate game (MMO) where you take to the high seas to explore, trade, fight pirates, or even become a pirate yourself.

While you've been building a Pirate game, people have been playing it for real.

BTW, as many times as you've posted in Discussion lately, how did you not see any of the thread titles?

No, but when I do, I find shit like the following by our good friend Robby Boy.

Fresh out of Newbie and seems mainly interested in Pirate threads.

Full Disclosure: I have never, nor will I ever, investigated forum members, for they are all to be trusted, which kinda negates the sticky thread in Newbie entitled "Trust Noone" (or something like that).

Earlier version. This wasn't a normal Ludum Dare compo, it was just to finish something - even if you have been working on it for a long time.

The earlier version was in PHP and used ajax requests to constantly poll for updates for position of things.

The one I did for ludum dare was in Node.js and using websockets, though unfortunately I never got it to work just right.

Creating a nicely working real time web based game and not using flash is surprisingly difficult.

-----

So I finally read a good summary of the pirate thing here:
http://www.dailytech.com/Pirateat40+Makes+Off+56M+USD+in+BitCoins+From+Pyramid+Scheme/article25538.htm

Cute story. I am surprised people invested so much in him. Does anyone even know his real name and where he lives?

This all gives me great hope for bitcoin. We have bank robberies, fraud, gambling, drug dealing, and all manner of fun that you can only have when you are dealing with something that matters.

Things that normal currency have that bitcoin doesn't (yet):
*Bribing politicians
*Paying ransoms
*Paying for sex

Once we get these, I think bitcoin we will be an officially accepted currency. Sell all the alpacha socks you like, you only count in the eyes of the government when you can pay off politicians with bitcoins.
