Original M1 chambering 30.06 ..... or M14 w/7.62x51 (7.62 NATO).

Everyone can keep their AK-47s.....

No vote for the M1 Garand? I am confused, why comment but not vote?

Because there are a bunch of Internet Kids under the impression that the M1 was a 7.62x51 Rifle....I SAID ORIGINAL M1.

<EDIT>

The Choices should be edited to read:

- M1 @ 30.06
- M1/M14 @ 7.62x51

I don't think I have ever seen a 7.62 M1? As far as I know they have always been 30.06, the M-14 was the first rifle to go to standardized NATO 7.62, right?

Just to be clear, I will add 30.06 to the poll.

AK-47 is reliable, but has shitty accuracy and fucking hurts to shoot after awhile.
Love the FN-FAL, but it's goddamned heavy.
Probably would pick the M-14.

I've seen an aftermarket conversion.

No, not aftermarket. 30.06 was difficult to carry enough ammo. 3.08/752x51 solved this, without taking too much power away.

30.06 vs .308/7.62x51/7.62 NATO is huge, in terms of a soldier's carry capabilities....

Yeah, It's funny that Majority of people who havent carried ammo before, jsut forget or flatout dont know how damn heavy ammo is throughout the day...

Thats one of the primary reasons i prefer the 5.56mm, That and well, Less chance of an unwanted casualty. I sometimes consider the 7.62's to be Overkill, But hey, Im never shooting at kevlar targets... soo.. Yeah...

Exactly.
.223 definitely helps to solve alot of problems in terms of being a happy medium for carry/kill power etc.

This question/poll overall doesn't really help to prove anything though.

My favorite battle rifle has far more to do with the round it chambers, than the overall rifle itself. I am a sucker for 7.6x51/.308 for anything over 50 yards.
Inside of 50 yards, I would simply carry a submachine gun that shared a round with my pistol.

I would only need 2 rounds to fight....lol. I just would stock up on 7.62x51/.308 for my long and medium range rifles and 45cal for my 1911s and submachine guns Wink

So, when you go out on patrol you are carrying 4 guns, a bolt-action .308 sniper rifle for long range, a .308 assault rifle for medium range, a .45 submachine gun for short range, and a .45 pistol for backup? Are you going to grab a shotgun too for when you enter rooms?  Tongue

OK, this makes sense. I suppose you leave the sniper rifle at home and switch it out for the assault rifle when you are going on a mission where you need it.

The question to ask first is.. "what is the mission?"
Are we storming a city building or taking pot shots at each other in the desert. The right weapon is subject to a variety of factors, most importantly the engagement range.
Overall I would want the G3. I have an AK and a very good RECCE AR-15 on back order. But the fact is that military gun contracts go to the low bidder, not the best gun. For example the G36 or the Steyr Aug are great mil weapons that few armies can afford. I think Saudi Arabia still uses the Steyr, but then they use a Lamborghini made vehicle for their transport jeep. (no kidding)

You could probably say the best rifle is the one which is useful in the most situations.

Nah, a holo or red dot sight typically has infinite eye relief, so I could throw one on the rail with no issue...something like a scope would be a no go though.

Iron sights work just fine for my purposes though (playing around on the outdoor range)
