Perhaps he is right. In 90% of the cases, Islam was spread though the use of force, mostly in the form of conquests and genocides. There are hundreds of examples. The current day Pakistan, which is 97% Muslim now was a majority Hindu region just 5 centuries ago. Similarly, Indonesia (90% Muslim now) was mostly Hindu and Buddhist. Iran was Zoroastrian before the Islamic conquest. Afghanistan was Animist, Hindu and Buddhist.

Christianity was spread in the "New World" through a massive campaign of genocide, in which more than 90% of the native population was exterminated. Those verses tell to fight when the non-Muslims at the time of prophet tortured and killed many Muslims. Muslims had no choice other than to fight and these verses came at that time. It is mentioned in Qur'an that if the non-Muslims(at the time of prophet) didn't want to fight, don't hurt them.

I don't know some deeper knowledge about Islam but what the ISIS is doing right is just completely unethical, immoral, and inhuman. Why would you promote rape, killing innocent people, torture, and war? Just to spread the word? I'm not knowledgeable about the Qur'an, but I'm pretty certain that there is not a verse there that promotes killing other innocent people just for the sake of Islam.

I agree that the Roman Catholic Church once entered a state wherein they would burn people at stake who doesn't believe in god and combat heresy and witchcraft. The Holy Inquisition, that is.
