If you had written down the seed, then it may be a good idea to provide the seed to someone you can trust and they can see if they can recover the funds for you. They may charge you for this, and there is a risk that they will scam you, however it would be a solution to your problem.

I would not be surprised if you received requests from people to give them your seed who are very new or have little/no positive trust, and I can say it is almost certain that they are going to try to scam you.
if there is anyone with a good trust score i will provide the seed and they can see if they can retrieve it.

if they can, 0.5 bitcoins in their way.

newbies or scammers are easily recognized no worries about that.

legendary or hero with good trust feedback can be blindly trusted no problem about that

Im not entirely sure I would trust anyone just based on rank, but if you consider me trustworthy enough you can send me the seed. Via PM or mail (shor3na@gmail.com), my PGP fingerprint is 4E32 814C 98C2 B12E C473 228B 940A 17DB BD6B 68E2 if you want to encrypt the message with PGP. You can also put the seed in an encrypted or otherwise protected container if thats easier for you and send me the password via a seperate channel.

I will also need an address where you want me to send the funds to, e.g. from a newly generated (and properly secured) wallet.

Im not really here, its just your imagination.

I would also suggest OP to send all the files in C:\Users\YourUserName\Appdata\Roaming\Local\Electrum. Compress files and encrypt it. Then send the password along with the seed. Files in the above dir maybe helpful too to recover your coins.

OP if you need I can try to help you as well at no extra cost.
Ps: Do not send your seed/wallet files to multiple people.

Checked the wallet files, there are > 10 different wallet files with 3 different seeds. One has 0.01, the others are empty. I will see if the seed shows different results with Electrum 2.2 or 2.3.1

Have you tried increasing the gap limit to something much larger then the default?

DoingJust did that, different wallets restore identical addresses as I assumed. I just let it generate the first 500 addresses, but the balance is still 0.

I also tried some typos and different word order.

It is also possible that he wrote down his seed incorrectly (or has bad handwriting and is reading it incorrectly) when it was first generated, received the 5 BTC at the address described above, for some reason deleted/lost the wallet file, then restored to a different seed.

You might want to have him send you a picture of how he wrote the seed down (assuming he wrote them down when he originally created the wallet) and you can use your judgement to see what some of the words he wrote down *should* have been.

Other then that, assuming the OP is not stringing you along, I would say someone either made a copy/paste error and didn't notice because the two addresses look somewhat similar, or there is malware on his computer.

You can also try increasing the gap limit to 500,000 or even 5,000,000 depending on how much processing power this takes.

I dont think generating more keys is a solution. It would be strange bug if electrum did this once, but never again. The virus is certainly an option, but in those cases the coins typically move quickly. The possible words are known and I checked for possible typos against that list. All words are valid and there are no similar words that can be easily confused.

It is also possible that he wrote down his seed incorrectly (or has bad handwriting and is reading it incorrectly) when it was first generated, received the 5 BTC at the address described above, for some reason deleted/lost the wallet file, then restored to a different seed.

The possible words are known and I checked for possible typos against that list.

If you think there's a possible mistake in the seed, you could give seedrecover a try: https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover/blob/master/docs/Seedrecover_Quick_Start_Guide.md. If you're a techie (and I know you are), it's quite easy to get up and running.

i honestly think you are going south with this.

the thing is i think the mistake is from my part.

if you download electrum 2.3.2 you will see, in the receive tab there is expire in 1hour.

my guess :

either my electrum was open and the address expired and i copied it and sent the guy

OR

when i received the coin it was on the 1hour and the address just dissapeared. i saw another post on the forum itself where a guy said his address is gone too.

the seed for sure is good, i copied and paste. even for the address when i sent it. i never write down i always copy paste.

the 0.01 was a trial i did to see if the address would magically re appear. i know thats stupid but i was trying tho.

i can tell the person who sent the bitcoins to sign his address if someone thinks i am making you all lose their time. thats not a problem, he's a nice guy and will be willing to help me recover my coins if he can do something about it

I set it up. I will let it run for a while. Its currently trying to find the address from the seed I was given. Eta is a few minutes on two mistakes, but I have something to do now. Will report when I can.

That would be awful unsafe and I would be very surprised if electrum would just forget a privat key because a userset time passed.

An address does not expire.
The "expires" field only means that the payment request expires.
This is used only if you export it as a bip70 payment request.

shorena thanks for the support and keeping trying, but i am prmature to bitcoins. i dont know what you posted. i do understand a few things but not everything.

also, if that makes a difference, i used default wallet or wallet1. the rest of the wallets are made out of panick. i dont know if it changes anything tho.

and i repeat again, i did not write anything down. everything was copy paste. that is 100% sure. no doubt about this.

the btccris software isnt that something you use if you miss remembered some words of your seed? didnt quite get this.

is there anything that can be done? electrum community does not have a support for this? ill be more than happy to send them all the files if they need it to recover my address.

as a matter of proof that the bitcoins were sent to me, and i am not making some weird story to get few bitcoins, do i need to make the sender sign his address that was used to send?

Well the thing is, I checked the first 500 addresses from the seed. Electrum only uses 20 for the start. If you used the request payment function it should have been part of the first 50 addresses easily, even if you have used the wallet previously for a short while. Your seed does not lead to the address though. So I checked whether there have been minor mistakes by hand. Afterwards I used the nice tool by btchris to check even more possible errors in the seed.

the btccris software isnt that something you use if you miss remembered some words of your seed? didnt quite get this.

Yes, but it also works on a correct seed. Its basically checking for errors.

is there anything that can be done? electrum community does not have a support for this? ill be more than happy to send them all the files if they need it to recover my address.

Im afraid the best support you will get is here. ThomasV is one of the electrum developers and btchris is all around very knowledgable when it comes to bitcoin.

as a matter of proof that the bitcoins were sent to me, and i am not making some weird story to get few bitcoins, do i need to make the sender sign his address that was used to send?

No, its not a trust issue. If the seed was not yours there is nothing anyone can do anyway, there are too many possible combinations. Its just that Im out of ideas how to find the missing privat key for the address. The seed itself is not correct. A variety of different electrum versions have resulted in an identical set of addresses (missing the crucial one). Since its a 13 word seed it can not be from 1.9.8 as the old version uses 12 words.

Without knowing the private key the bitcoins are lost there. There is no way to brute force a private key from an address. Its also not possible to brute force the seed.

I could check the other seeds in a similar way, but as you said those are from wallets you created later.

Im still not entirely sure what went wrong. My interpretation before I got the seed and the files was that there was something wrong with your particular installment of electrum that made the seed not work. I even had the thought that it might be an windows issue and tested the seed on a linux system to make sure. It always ends up with the same addresses.

There are two conclusions I can draw from this.

#1 there is something wrong with the seed. I dont know what though. If you copy pasted it there is little room for error.
#2 there is something wrong with the address. The first address by your seed is somewhat similar to the one that was used for the transaction. The first two or three symbols are identical. Could you have mixed up the address with one from a different wallet of yours? Maybe you tested several wallets before deciding for electrum.

Of course there is always the possibility that your machine was infected by very advanced malware, but if thats the case there is nothing anyone can do anyway. Do a routine check with your prefered software or boot dvd, it certainly does not hurt, but I would not be surprised if it finds nothing. There is known malware that is changing bitcoin address you copy paste, but AFAIK it used a distinct address and the funds are moved instantly or at least very quickly.

If anyone has any idea, again, Im open for things to try. I will ponder this further, but it feels like a dead end.

Im not really here, its just your imagination.

OP, have you scanned you computer for possible exploits? Have you confirmed that the address wasn't changed during copy+paste?
