I just accidentally sent 2.4BTC to a wallet that I have forgotten the password for. Not calling them lost yet, but I'm racking my brain for hours and no luck.

Wow those are bad news, 2.4 btc is a real deal to lose.
Try to use all your passwords you have ever used, try all the combinations
i think maybe there is a password recovery software called Cian and Abel, so I think that it can be able to help you out and can recover your password for you.
If successful, tips are always welcomed.

It would be a factor if every single available coin was constantly trading but huge amounts are sitting still doing nothing. There's no way of telling whether they're waiting for the right moment or lost forever.

I read a few month ago a article, that NVIDIA engineer John Ratcliff calculated that the total amount of coins that lay over 1.5 years is around 4.200.000 Bitcoins (30% of all bitcoins today).

I think that of this 4.2 million bitcoins, 3.5 million are lost.

And i bet when the price will go around 250 dollar for a while, a lot of more people will lost their private keys.
But i think its good for bitcoin, the value will be higher with so a big amount of lost bitcoins.
i can only hope that the percentage is that high. more bitcoins lost=more money for me  Cool Cool

Here are some btc addresses that receive bitcoins but these can't be spent
For more to learn check this thread the posts from BurtW https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1168745.0

dunno the bad side, would be that everyone will deal with micro number all the time, if too many coins are lost

i know that many want their precious coins to be rounded, using mbtc and micro sometimes is confusing

the amount of accessible bitcoins will continue to decrease as bitcoins are "lost".  It doesn't matter for the usability of bitcoin in a technical sense because they are infinitely divisible.  Lost bitcoins probably help push the price up if anything.

Do you have a backup?
USB flash drives don't tend to last that long, or you might lose it.

I am really curious to know how many coins this buddy lost: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1173700.0
It has to be over 100 if he is offering a 20 BTC reward for anyone who can help him recover it.

EDIT: There was around 138 coins in the lost wallet/address.

I dont like USB flash drives too, it can be easily corrupted.
Before few years i had so much information in USB when i formatted my pc and when i wanted to restore(put them back) the usb was corrupted.
So i prefer more having multi backups, like in cloud(google drive, dropbox), USB, CD/DVD, etc...

That's very pity, it was accidentally and i think no chance to get them back.

Assuming this is a desktop wallet and you have a vague idea of what the password might be, you should really give this a try https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover

Good luck!

Everytime someone gets poorer by losing coins, we all get richer because we now own a larger percentage of the total amount of bitcoins that will ever be created.

There is no way of knowing how many coins are lost so i dont think it will affect the price. Total market cap of bitcoin will always be based of the total number mined and that is the number the market look at. Lost coins are just lost and nothing else...
