I don't want everyone I pay in BTC to be able to see the balance of my main BTC wallet so I break the link with blockchain.info's Shared Coin service which is built into its wallet. Unfortunately Shared Coin is down for me right now and so I find myself unable to send BTC. Is there another mixer as reputable/trustworthy as blockchain.info?

You can always use an exchange of your choice. I suggest bitfinex.com, because they don't wait for many confirmations. When you withdraw you will withdraw from another address in their wallet. So nobody can connect the dots until he has the data bitfinex owns.

exchanges are not a private mixer. especially if your account if verified with your personal details. a bitcoin mixer is much better as they respect your privacy in full. as amph suggested already, bitmixer.io is a trusted mixer.

Both a mixer and an exchange should respect your privacy in principle. You are trusting that an exchange will not deliver details when asked, and you are trusting a mixer will not keep logs and dont deliver details when asked.. both are centralized and require trust, they are not real solutions to anonymity. Unfortunately it's all we can have for now. I've heard about CoinJoin but not sure how that works.

Do you want to wash scammed coins? I dont see whats the problem with exchanges as long as you dont fear they are corrupt and could extort you or that you deal with illegal things and need to hide from the law. You know... in mixing bitcoint mixer arent as good as exchanges. Mixer often enough allow it to guess pretty good what happened. Its simply because they are bound to pay out the funds in practically the same size, even though over some addresses, and in a certain timeframe. That leaves not so much possibilities as to what happened.

Unfortunately, there aren't many reputable Bitcoin mixers around here. Only one I recommend is Bitmixer.io which has been proven as trustworthy. Keep the signed message you get safely. It is a strong proof and the only proof you can use in case if a dispute arises. Another method to mix your coin is to buy a stable altcoin, sell it for Bitcoin in another exchange and withdraw it. Total fees you encounter maybe higher than the fees charged by Bitmixer.io. Both a mixer and an exchange should respect your privacy in principle. You are trusting that an exchange will not deliver details when asked, and you are trusting a mixer will not keep logs and dont deliver details when asked.. both are centralized and require trust, they are not real solutions to anonymity.
Wallets of most exchanges are known and is more prune to attacks/hacks unlike wallets of mixers. Unfortunately it's all we can have for now. I've heard about CoinJoin but not sure how that works.
DarkWallet is the only good implementation of CoinJoin which I know of but it was not successful.

I've heard of people doing this before with Monero (XMR) because it's an untraceable (and fairly stable) currency. Buy Monero on one exchange, send it to another, then exchange it back to bitcoin and your coins have basically been mixed. Low fees, and it doesn't take much time either.

My experience with mixers is somewhat limited, nor do I have any experience with exchanges or trading BTC for AltCoins.
But, I can say that I have had excellent results with bitmixer.io. That is why I chose them for my signature ad.
SharedCoin's service sometimes is down, I have had that experience as well. I would have pretty good confidence in both, but if I had to choose one only, I would choose bitmixer.
Follow their instructions completely! <====

The exact reason is still unknown but we can speculate that it was rejected because it is a dark service. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=885362.0;allDarkWallet is the only good implementation of CoinJoin which I know of but it was not successful.
What happened with DarkWallet? I thought it was in alpha and moving along. It is still in alpha stage. No 'major' development is there and also it was not very successful. If it reaches at least beta stage, we maybe able to see more users and we can start using it. But for now, ir is not really useful. Unfortunately, there aren't many reputable Bitcoin mixers around here. Only one I recommend is Bitmixer.io which has been proven as trustworthy. Keep the signed message you get safely. It is a strong proof and the only proof you can use in case if a dispute arises.

But shapshift.io charges quite a hefty fee, no? At least that's what I heard. I've used bitmixer.io multiple times without a problem, simply for testing purposes.
