Pretty humorous.  *** is reportedly installing a 'pick and place' system to do the SMT themselves.

Ok, if you don't have libertarian leanings and do take issue with what's going on with *** right now - think about your purchase decision carefully.

Even if you are 'locked in' to *** right now, as most are, there are alternatives for future purchases.  All of them from relatively reputable members of the community.

I think the *** you mentioned means "BFL".  Is it ?

Yes.  Or *** as not to give them advertisement.

Once the pre-order phase is over, are you really going to up the price to $1999? Even if there's a lot of competition, offering better GH/s/$ than your ASIC?

I can see why you run this strategy but it isn't feasible to keep prices up when competitors start to deliver their products, and difficulty will have quadrupled or more.

It isn't particularly fair to "punish" people with higher prices once the product is finally available either.
Before BFL started this pre-order madness companies used to cover the risk of manufacturing a product themselves- after all they make a profit from selling it for more than the production costs. You aren't selling the ASIC for mere production cost when you take money beforehand, are you?

So, quick recap: Bfl might deliver way earlier or much later, or never.

Ngzhang is certainly delivering by February-March if there are enough pre-orders.
Tycho is aiming for March or later as well, but offers less Ghash for the same price. (Deepbit never was a bargain, but reliable so I'm confident in a delivery.)

If BFL should really deliver in November or December ordering ASICs anywhere at this moment is very r i s k y. BFL business practices are crap, and just cause they do it doesn't mean others need to follow their shitty lead.

I won't be ordering anything without credit card. Pre-ordering is a pretty crappy practice. Too bad everyone is doing it. I would tolerate it, if it was 30days max before release. When it's 3+ months your just stealing peoples money for a free loan. That's directed at everyone not just avalon. Good luck, and hope things work out.

How much do you need to collect to begin the production, in case you can say that?

My anger against what is wrong in the Bitcoin community is productive:
Bitcointa.lk - Replace "Bitcointalk.org" with "Bitcointa.lk" in this url to see how this page looks like on a proper forum (Announcement Thread)
Hashfast.org - Wiki for screwed customers

we don't like paypal.

Paypal also doesn't like you:

Paypal is not an issue here. But pre-orders are imo. Not accepting Paypal is the only way to go. Not only is it a well-known fact that paypal is 'evil' but I never understood why people are even interested in Bitcoin if they see nothing wrong with paypal.

I believe the idea is to "insure" your preorder such that you have some recourse should things turn sour.  Paypal has some measures in place to protect buyers if the unthinkable does happen, and so do the credit card issuers that these same buyers are likely to use to fund their purchase-via-paypal so as to be doubly protected.

On the flip-side, paypal themselves have policies in place (like the 20 day preorder time limit) to protect themselves from being taken advantage of and having to pay out buyer protection money too often.

How many weeks after purchase could you make a claim with the credit card company or paypal at all? 6 weeks? We are talking about months here. So, useless in 2013.

In theory, it is possible to chargeback CC up to 180 days.

Credit card companies love to do chargebacks, so 6 months is not unusual. Even after that, just give them a call and they'll rip the funds right out of the merchant's account no questions asked. Assuming the merchant is still in business...
