The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

+1.  This is a google maps-style interface that lets you zoom and scroll more easily.  I highly recommend it if you're going to spend more than 2 minutes looking at today's XKCD.
