I think I may have the serial USB connection via putty to the S3+.  I connected TX and RX and now I have on putty a stream of text or letters.  But how do I input commands to the antminer to reset or flash the firmware?
I had powered the miner off during firmware flash and it stopped starting up and only the red light flashes now

Was the reset button (pictured below) able to help in any way?

Do a factory reset using the button shown above.

Follow Bitmain's directions for flashing the firmware to the most recent version (you use the web interface, not putty), section 6.2 of the manual: https://bitmaintech.com/support.htm?pid=007201407180243004432lBQW28O0633

While you're at it, upgrade cgminer on the unit to 4.9.2: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.msg11772718#msg11772718

I am getting no echo from the serial-USB cable when I attach a paperclip jumper to TX/RX maybe it's a bad cable?
what a stupid evil cable?Huh  I wasted days on this!!!!

Instead of wasting more day's go over and make a ticket: https://bitmain.zendesk.com/hc/en-us

They should help you though it.

the miner must be still ok since there is no hardware damage and was functioning fine a week ago.  I think the adafruit type cable might be defective and you have to order one from china on ebay with a converter+cables.  but the detect utility is showing a signal from the USB-serial chip, I'm getting output from putty but no echo when I type.
Am I supposed to attach only TX-RX, RX-TX no ground?
I wrote to bitmain but I can't get an echo on putty or shellx, all the new drivers are installed all the port settings are as described xon/xoff

Ask Bitmain to do a remote session to help with this.  You can ask in a ticket or even over phone depending on country.

But try this and see what happens, hopefully they will help.
