Technical Workshop: libbitcoin; Principles and Fallacies in Cryptoeconomics

Eric Voskuil, lead developer of the alternative Bitcoin implementation "libbitcoin", comes to Munich to talk about the project, giving us the opportunity to look into this toolkit for building Bitcoin applications.

Eric also publishes articles about risks, principles, and fallacies in cryptoeconomics that we will dive into. So there's plenty of material for a focused and critical discussion round.

* https://twitter.com/evoskuil
* https://www.linkedin.com/in/evoskuil
* https://github.com/evoskuil
* https://github.com/libbitcoin/libbitcoin/
* https://github.com/libbitcoin/libbitcoin/wiki/Cryptoeconomics

Target Audience: Advanced and expert-level Bitcoin followers and developers wanting to learn about the intricacies of the ecosystem in order to be able to meaningfully contribute.

This evening will be the first installment of a new series of workshops where we focus on technical subjects specific to Bitcoin development for an advanced audience.

Resilience in Bitcoin, Proof-of-Work, Energy Consumption

The Munich Security Conference is on, and like last year we cooperate with the https://pirate-secon.org/ counter-conference, being kindly hosted on location.

As always, our meetup takes place in the evening and is free to attend, but you're welcome to get tickets (€25,-) for the full conference that runs for the whole weekend.

The theme of the conference is "Resilience". Resilience is also one of the fundamental prerequisites for Bitcoin to function. No one party or interest group must be able to take over the system. We will be looking into how this is achieved, and perhaps what can be learned from it in a broader context.

Proof-of-work consensus aka Mining is certainly one of the cornerstones that enables the *Security* of the network. Lately though, articles have been making the rounds that Bitcoin requires as much energy as countries like Denmark, and that one Bitcoin transaction consumes as much energy as a family home in a week. Is that true? Is Bitcoin sustainable in a world afflicted with climate change, struggling to achieve CO2 neutrality? We will be trying to shed some light on this issue. Probably we'll have a pretty open-ended discussion round.

Target Audience: Everyone interested in the political, societal, and environmental aspects of Bitcoin and related technologies.

ICO Night: VC Perspectives

Due to popular request we will be looking at ICOs again, examining the state of the industry in 2018. We will focus especially on perspectives from a traditional VC viewpoint, aiming to reach a balanced conclusion at the end of the evening.

On the one hand, we have articles pointing out that most ICOs of 2017 have already failed. https://news.bitcoin.com/46-last-years-icos-failed-already/

On the other hand, more and more traditional startups are discovering this new way of funding, and are about to actively put it into practice. https://www.coindesk.com/ico-tokens-already-changing-traditional-startups/

The Lightning Network: Introduction and Deep-Dive

Christian Decker from Blockstream and the DLT staff from MainbornWolff will give us an introduction and deep-dive into the Lightning Network.

How should an internet-native money and cash look like? How to make it scale while remaining decentralized? How to achieve the capacity required to serve the daily transaction needs not only of every human on this planet, but also of the machines and automated processes of the future; that is, millions of transactions per second world-wide, with near-zero fees?

The Bitcoin community has been debating (to say the least) for the last 3 years, and even most of the harshest critics of the "small blockers" don't deny in principle that a so-called layer 2 is inevitable.

A blockchain fundamentally doesn't scale. It must run redundantly on thousands of computers world-wide in order to remain truly immutable and incorruptible. To chisel every single payment for a coffee into such a ledger system is thus far too heavy on resources.

Enter the Lightning Network. Turns out there is a way that Alice can be paid by Bob for a coffee without having to tell the world, while still being safe from double spending. How does that work? Tonight we will learn all about the clever solution that has been found for this problem.

Target Audience: We will have two parts. First we will address a general audience, later we will dive deeper into the matter, demonstrating how to set up and run a lightning node. We will probably also have an extended Q&A and discussion panel to talk about the future of scalability in blockchains, layer 2 solutions, the challenges, and potential further applications therein.

The Bitcoin Standard: The Decentralized Alternative to Central Banking

Economist and author Saifedean Ammous comes to Munich to talk about "The Bitcoin Standard", which is the title of his new book in which he examines various historical monetary systems, from seashells to the gold standard, in order to draw lessons relevant to Bitcoin.

Obviously, you'll have the opportunity to get your copy of the book signed in-person tonight! The book will be sold tonight too while stocks last.

We'll also have special guests from Venezuela, so we can learn first-hand about the situation in that country, and how crypto-currencies are being utilized there.

Target audience: Everyone interested in the macro-economic effects Bitcoin might have on the world in the near future.

⚡ Lightning Workshop: Incentivizing Mesh Networks + Be Your Own Fan with Matreon

The Lightning Network will continue to be one of the hottest topics in our space, so let's start a series of workshops.

Sjors Provoost, contributor to Bitcoin Core and c-lightning, and Jörg Hermsdorf from CONSERVE Blockchain-Service will instruct us today about setting up Lightning for specific use cases.

There can be never enough WiFi hotspots. Jörg will introduce his project in which he forked Freifunk. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freifunk

Freifunk is meant to be free as in speech as well as free as in beer, but maybe a lot more people will set up routers if they can earn a few bits of crypto-coins lightning-streamed from our wallets?

Sjors will demonstrate how to set up Matreon, a self-hosted platform to receive recurring donations. https://btcmanager.com/matreon-may-soon-reward-creators-via-bitcoins-lightning-network/

We will actively set up a full node and lightning on AWS, pay ourselves and then take the money out again.

Please have an installed Bitcoin Core node synchronized to testnet ready on your laptops! https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Running_Bitcoin

Target Audience: Strongly technical. Developers, advanced Bitcoin followers, or mesh network enthusiasts.

₿🗣️ Crypto-Circle in Englischer Garten 🏞️

Hello everyone, let's finish the summer break with something new: a casual-but-constructive get-together in the Amphitheater in the Englischer Garten. The weather forecast promises still warm weather, and we have some leftover beverages (beers, mate, and other stuffs) that we can offer and share as long as stocks last.

We don't have an official program, but the idea for this format is to discuss a range of topics one at a time with the whole group. Whoever wants can also give an impromptu lightning talk (free-style, no equipment at the place; topic can be about the technology, about economics, about political perspectives, and similar educational content; no marketing or ICO promotion!).

₿🗣️ Crypto Hardware Wallets: New Trezor Model T + DIY with Arduino

We'll have Vojtěch Černý and his team from SatoshiLabs this time, introducing their new "Trezor Model T" and giving us the opportunity to discuss everything about Crypto Hardware Wallets in general, and we'll have Stepan Snigirev giving a teaser about his current DIY project based on Arduino.

Target Audience: As every so often we'll try to structure the meetup so that we'll have two parts. The first part should be accessible for newcomers. A new hardware wallet for crypto-currencies will be presented, the purpose of such devices will be discussed, and their usage be demonstrated. After a break we'll dive deeper into specific details for enthusiasts and professionals who want to stick around longer, highlighting aspects like the hardware development process, security considerations, and much more.

Hardware wallets might not only be crypto-currency related, but also may play a role in the near future to enable managing our identities in a self-sovereign way. Our guests tonight come from the "Institute of Cryptoanarchy" after all, so we can also discuss some sociopolitical aspects if the audience so desires.

₿🗣️ Privacy and Scriptless Scripts

A lot of people have been wondering lately about the GDPR and privacy laws, and how all this might apply to blockchains, as the data contained in the transactions and "smart contracts" of an immutable blockchain is in most cases pretty personal and usually cannot be altered or removed.

There is a lot that can be debated about this complex topic in any desired broadness and depth, with plenty of material for several evenings, but tonight we're going to pick out certain aspects.

First we are going to learn if and how businesses and startups in the space are affected by these regulations already today, what they are doing about it, and what their stance about user privacy is in general.

Suffice to say and in any case, the individual's privacy on the technological level has actually and always been the goal of the movement that eventually led to the creation of Bitcoin.

So later in the evening we're going to look at how "smart" contracts, and the data required to run them, might look like in the future when a technique named "Scriptless Scripts" is applied. The scripts of this type are executed off-chain, and are merely *settled* on-chain.

So what does this mean? We're going to learn about the cryptographic toolbox and the mathematical building blocks for the future of programmable money and more, in a way that also laymen can gain insights and the ability to assess the practical implications and the impact on the use-cases they care about.

The timing is good because the first altcoins, called "Grin" and "Beam", which are based on the so-called "Mimblewimble" blockchain format, are about to launch these days. Besides being related to Scriptless Scripts, this format helps blockchains also to scale better, while improving privacy and fungibility. The implementation of these concepts into Bitcoin is on the roadmap, but it might still take a few years.
