I think that there was a similar thread in the past here.
I'm currently using Windows 10 preview, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 Ultimate on a couple of systems. All operating systems are 64-bit and some are heavy customized (to increase performance).
I had some Ubuntu system in the past but that wasn't really working out for me.

Both Windows and Linux - well, not so much Linux recently, I'm afraid.

One of my computers I use Linux, Ubuntu 15.04 and another one of them I use Kali, learning the ropes. Windows is not my cup of tea with all the viruses/trojans etc that are out hunting the users down, to risky for me.

Currently using windows, i did want to use linx but found it difficult to get going with it.  I plan to come back at a later date and have another go with linux as its safer i'd prefer to use it ideally.

No. However, I was following up with the update to Linux Mint recently and it looks great. I'm thinking of trying it out when I find the time and the right machine to reinstall.
There is just a lot of maintenance work on them and a lot of files. I'd hate to lose anything of importance.

Linux is safer and it is worth spending the time to learn it.

I use Windows where it just has to work.
  • Laptop: I can't aford to fiddle around just to get things work when I'm on travel. Some free-standing lodges away from popular tourist destinations I visited only have mobile connected internet. The mobile connection is usually etablished with an USB stick which primarily runs on Windows.
  • Gaming.
  • When dealing with work related stuff: I need 100% compatibility with *.docx *.xlsx *.pptx *.vsd files, not 99,9%.

I use Linux where I want confidence and privacy: for personal things.

I personally prefer Windows over Linux. Windows does have much more functionality and programs. Linux on the other hand doesn't have much programs specifically ported for it. The UI is also fairly easy to use. Security wise, Linux would be much more safer but Windows can just be as safe if proper measures are taken.

I use Linux Deepin and Fedora as my main desktop operating systems, and
CentOS/Debian for servers. Deepin is really pretty and fits to my needs.

I really can't stand Windows for a number of reasons, but I shouldn't
get into that here.

I'm using Windows 8.1 on my laptop, but sometimes I prefer Linux due to the fact that it is a more secure and faster OS.

I personally prefer Windows over Linux. Windows does have much more functionality and programs. Linux on the other hand doesn't have much programs specifically ported for it. The UI is also fairly easy to use. Security wise, Linux would be much more safer but Windows can just be as safe if proper measures are taken.

Windows is light years ahead of Linux in terms of security (but not privacy). Not only have they formally verified most of their kernel drivers to not crash the system over the past 5 years, but they have implemented every single OpenBSD stack protection including stack randomization, PIE, stack gap, W^X memory protection, and a slew of others and all of it is enabled by default. Kernel.org has these protections, but you have to manually enable them they are almost never on by default on any distro I've used. You also have to manually patch the system with GrSecurity/PaX in order to prevent serious udev priv escalation and get better memory read/write protections.

The only reason Linux appears more secure is that malware writers don't bother with it as it's such a tiny market share of desktops when deploying their bank credential sucking shitware. The vast majority of that shitware is enabled by Java applets, and Adobe insecurity. Remove those and your system won't easily be compromised. Every single time you hear of a "Java 0day" it's likely an applet exploit. Why the fuck Oracle doesn't simply deprecate and discontinue browser-side Java applet support nobody will ever know.

If you're using Linux for desktop first get the Linux Libre version of the kernel.org release removed of blobs, then patch it with grsec. Now you have to manually tinker with paxctl program flags to get Chromium to work but it's the only way to bring your system at par with Windows or OpenBSD default protections.

Of course you can always just use something like Qubes if you're a heavy bitcoin trader and wish to separate important things like credentials and wallets from each other, and from network facing daemons or browsers that can be exploited as you can spin up a new VM with Qubes on the fly.

Most of my computers run Slackware LINUX - some of them are very old machines running older versions, but it gets the job done, they're dedicated single-function machines that never download anything, and they're behind a LINIX-based firewall so security on them isn't a major issue.

I have 3 machines for gaming ONLY that run XP Sp3
I have 1 machine for gaming running Windows 7, that will eventually probably replace one of the XP machines.

If it wasn't for games, I'd be 100% LINUX by now - but some of the games I play do NOT play well with WINE if at all.

I'm no longer legendary just in my own mind!

Windows is light years ahead of Linux in terms of security.

Windows is KNOWN to have security holes that M$ will not fix, due to the fact it would break backwards compatability if they DID try to fix them.

Windows security is a pathetic JOKE.

There are 3 reasons you see almost all trojans/viruses/etc written for Windows:

 1) There ARE a lot more Windows machines around.
 2) There are a LOT more vulnerabilities in Windows
 3) LINUX users tend to be a LOT more security concious on average than Windows users

Hint - there are a LOT more Internet SERVERS that run LINUX than run Windows. There are 2 primary reasons for THAT (1) STABILITY (2) SECURITY

Win 8 and Win 10 is a joke.

I just hope Linux gets better, i`d skip mac easily

Mostly OSX, OpenBSD, and Linux Mint.

To a lesser extent, I'll use other GNU/Linux flavors, FreeBSD, and even various DOS's such as MS-DOS, Carbon OS (LightDOS), or FreeDOS. And of course Windows 7.

I hate them all.

i'm using window 8.1 ..
what about window 10 .Huh hows the OS ..!! IS software of this window is available???

Better disable all the keyloggers on Win 10 if you install it. It's largely a cloud based OS where your desktop is just a personal assistant. Everything you do is vacuumed by data mining https://jonathan.porta.codes/2015/07/30/windows-10-seems-to-have-some-scary-privacy-defaults/

You can still disable these things for now, probably not in the near future.

I like to use the Windows operating system. This is the one that I am the most used to having throughout the years and since I work on computers, I have had a lot of experience with doing all of this on the Windows system. I know there are quite a few people who do not like the Windows systems, but they are some of the best selling in the country so they must be doing something right. They do well for me and I do not plan to use any of the other ones that are around so I think that is what I will probably stick with unless something really goes wrong with it over the years.

Mac is one that I do not plan to use ever. I hate the Mac computers and think they are overpriced and they are slow and clunky. The only thing I ever heard about these is that you should choose to go with them because they cannot get a virus. But of course they will find out that viruses can happen on these computers. Of course there is some viruses that will go with the computer. While they are made slightly different compared to the windows computers, someone is going to become smart enough to take over and make this kind of virus and there goes the benefit of using this kind of computer.

I had to use these computers when I was in school when I was in advertising. I always thought they were slow and did not work as well as you would like. I know people raved about how great and the college tried to get me to purchase one of my own, but I refused. I loved my windows computer and each time I had to use a Mac computer, it became harder to use even though they were new. I would not recommend using this kind of operating system for any of your needs.

I have heard a few things about Linux, but do not know anyone personally who has used this system. It seems like a great option if you want the functionality of using the windows system but would like some of the cool features that come from using a Mac. I might recommend this one, except that I have never personally used it in the past so I cannot really help with that.

So out of what I have used, I would go with the windows systems. It is easier to use and I like it the most.

Arch Linux, because it's light-weight, and I like its package manager (pacman) most of all distro families.

Although I can do a typical manual command-line Arch Linux installation, I've been using Antergos (which is basically Arch Linux with a graphical installer) on my main machine for half a year now. My desktop environment is the Gnome 3 Shell. In this setup it would also be very beginner-friendly. I'm very happy with it and it practically ended my distro-hopping phase.

Anything Unix, though quite a few jobs in the past involved using a Windows desktop to shell into Unix boxes. Right now I've got a Macbook (and I'm loving OS X) and various boxes running Linux (mostly Debian or Ubuntu). In the near future I'm setting up a new NAS, and that'll be either a BSD- or Solaris-derivative.

windows is closed source, you'll have to trust them that they won't send the information anyway even if you disallow it or or use tools to disable

of course microsoft is nice and would never do it if you don't allow, right?

Windows, Linux wasn't convenient IMO and Mac is too expensive and not that important if you aren't a designer IMO.

I can recommend any Ubuntu distrubtion though.

I agree with you Linux is more complicated for using. It has too many accrued functions and very bad design. Windows is windows.
I have linux-edubuntu on my lap top and it is very bad for using.

I don't. I have a hard time using Windows, I don't have a hard time using Linux.

Which seems complicated and hard to use is relative to what you learned on.

I learned on Linux. Most people learned on Windows.

It's a matter of what you are familiar with.

Since I started using computers, I have been using Windows. I have never liked Linux because of the limits in functionalities. Windows simplifies everything to the extend that my three year old son operates without any problem.

Just as an example, a close friend of mine was having trouble getting skype to work on Windows. It worked in the past but it suddenly stopped working whenever she plugged her USB headset in. Continued to work with built-in mic but not the headset.

For several days I tried helping her, figuring out what was wrong with it. Bought a new headset, that didn't help either.

Finally I asked a friend. His response "First thing to try is always a reboot"

So we did that and suddenly her skype started working with the USB headset.

That would have never occurred to me because rebooting is never the solution in Linux.

Windows 10, Chrome OS and Android. I used to use SuSe on a desktop, but that's not too handy for mobile computing. I want to start using Ubuntu, and that's the reasonI bought the Win 10 notebook, but atm I seem to have got myself locked into Windows to my regret.

You guys should give Elementary OS a shot. It's designed to be really easy to use, you don't have to learn the terminal/commands. Plus it's gorgeous and uses very little RAM, check it out on YouTube. It's been a full year now since I moved to eOS from Win 10 (since the Insider program) and I totally love it. For gaming I have the Steam client installed which is all I need really Smiley

Recently i feel Ubuntu has passed Windows when it comes to ease of use. Except if you want to play games.  Grin Then Linux is quite the hassle.
I run Xubuntu myself, and I even managed to make my dad switch from Windows to Ubuntu.

Linux on all my laptop computers. I see no better way than light waight OS with multimedia support.
Linux gives my old computers better battery time and lover temperatures than Windows.
Desktop however needs windows as for gaming and some rare cases where linux just cant do.

I just exchanged Ubuntu for Linux Mint MATE. So far it's looking okay: simple desktop that has everything I need and works quite well.
Only weird thing: it has Yahoo and other forgotten search engines as default, I had to manually add Google to my browsers!

That's because MATE cares about privacy and Google makes its money by turning you into the product it sells, which is counter to privacy.

Ubuntu phone and ubuntu desktop ftw.
I hate what Ubuntu did to the default desktop, since they were planning to make a phone-version of Ubuntu. Microsoft tried the same: make an OS designed for phones and put it on a desktop.
Personally I like to keep those things strictly separated: a simple menu-button with a simple taskbar on my desktop, and some random loose icons on my phone. My Linux Mate is already "too fancy" with shadows behind windows and transparancy. You wouldn't print a book on transparant paper, why would you want transparant windows on your computer?

Yah same here. Windows 7 has very simple designs, I already used to it, I cannot change for an upgrade anymore.

Windows 7. But I am planning to upgrade my OS to windows 10. Does anyone here have a problem with windows 10? Please share it here so we can decide if we will upgrade or not. Thank you in advance.

Depends on whether you mind Microsoft spying and monitoring everything you do.

Personally I'd keep Windows 7 for as long as you can (or ideally venture into Linux if you value privacy and security).

When I first switched to Linux (think it was Mint) I was amazed by how much quicker my system ran.

Windows has so much bloatware, it's a shame I still have to use it to play games
