https://freenetproject.org/

"Freenet is a peer-to-peer platform for censorship-resistant communication. It uses a decentralized distributed data store to keep and deliver information, and has a suite of free software for publishing and communicating on the Web without fear of censorship. Both Freenet and some of its associated tools were originally designed by Ian Clarke, who defined Freenet's goal as providing freedom of speech on the Internet with strong anonymity protection."

So it is also basically a free storage space.

Yes i've heard about this. Never tried it, but it seems it's very slow and archaic. Maidsafe will deprecate Freenet and will be able to deliver everything that Freenet always dreamed with, it will be huge. It's decentralized internet before Kim Dotcom ever thought about it.

Every time I've looked into it it's unusably slow and uses tons of bandwidth. I keep hoping it will get better but I think TOR took a lot of interest away from it.

My guess is, it will be faster the more people use it?

I have looked at it several times. I think it is a good alternative for media (bloggers etc.) in countries where censorship is hard. It's true that it is slow and "looks old", but that is mainly because there is no CMS available and so most data are HTML files written not exactly by design experts. I assume it's also possible to make it look better with personal stylesheets.

What I don't like is that it is impossible to ban / delete things like child pornography and hate speech, but that is due to its architecture. I am curious if MaidSafe and Storj have ways to deal with this issues which don't infringe privacy.

I didn't hear about it until now, but on the other hand did hear a lot about alternative to that service from Kim dotcom, which in the end will
probably leave it for the history books, since everyone who likes the idea of decentralised internet will most likely end up using Kim's version
because it is the one with most exposure.

cheers

Dont forget maidsafe. I wonder if Kim and David Irvine will work together or will bash each other to become the most used network.. would be sad to see but after all it's all business.Personally I trust David Irvine more than I can trust Kim Dotcom to do a good job with this.

It is one of the temerarious ideas beyond imaginations of many technicians. If the plan could be realized in some degree, the current industries especially the entertainment industry will be seriously blew. The companies such as Napster and Gnute lla have made the record industry alarmed, and Freenet implements a step further.

Very good idea but remain to see how will go. Will be developed more or will remain in its situation as a starter. I think that without sponsors or good developers to embrace that aim it will not go in any place.
