What is RetroShare?

One important thing I think this needs is a context or grouping system so you can group "friends" into separate groups who cannot see whether you have any "friends" outside the group they are in; or even with access controls so you can allow certain groups to see into certain other groups.

As it was last time I ran it, you were able to see who I had as connections, which prevented various other potential connections from being willing to connect to me until such time as we could set up some kind of cutout machine in-between us to insulate them from being seen by you...

They would like, for example, to be able to post to the forum without you being able to recognise "aha, I happen to know that that guy knows markm, is connected directly to him in fact, so I'll add that fact to my report to Big Brother..."

Of course instead of them not connecting to me maybe I ought not be connecting to you. But then there goes the network...

You can go into darknet mode and sign the keys of the people you trust.  Maybe your idea would work better on Freenet with Sone.  Let me know if you want to try it.

I am already on Sone, three times in fact, once as markm, once as Knotwork, and once as Digitalis.

However the web of trust forgot my identities, and the recover option does not let you assign your nickname, so I had to pretend to create nickname from scratch but over-rode the new random keys with my old keys for my identities. It still after many days will not let me introduce any of them, still saying it takes some time to download puzzles. Sone seems to remember at least parts of the conversations I was in though.

Its not as if it created a new identifty for me as me at Desktop, or if it did it deleted my existing identity as me at unspecified place while it was at it, as it only has one identity for me, now known as being at Desktop, and knows of no other people whatsoever.

EDIT: It also knows of no forums etc, evidently decided to forget which ones I was subscribed to and so on.

EDIT2: So I was forced to shazam my supertroubleshooter skills, hack the .retroshare directory and thereby resurrect myself.

I've never had any problems with Retroshare like that.  I'm just sorting out the WoT plugin on Freenet maybe you can help me get started with Sone after I've finished that.

I'm a little surprised as how their site shows tens of thousands of downloads, but the DHT network shows only ~750 retroshare nodes... anyone have a theory about why the number is so low compared to the downloads?

The new version has a DHT network and visible nodes? All we had/have was/is our neighbors, who are almost all almost always offline.

Maybe with the ability to see 750 people you don't need to rely on your offline neighbors now?

The thing has crappy anonymity anyway, if you connect to me, you can see who all my neighbors are, so for any of them to be able to post something without you knowing its a direct neighbor of mine posting they;d have to set up a cutout node between me and them, which most people are not likely to do, especially when there are better systems such as Tor and i2p that are better designed from the start.

not even to talk about their bugs, just check out the bugtracker. i used it for some time and its annoying as shit:
DHT = DoS with UDP packets, why broadcasting ur identity only once in DHT, no you have to do this constantly in a loop with unlimited bandwidth
GPG = good idea but always using some malformed implementations (thats why i dont/cant use it anymore, according to the new GPG implementation my pubring is invalid ^^)

It has DHT yes, but that's nothing new i think, the nodes are not visible, just shows the number of RS nodes and the total number of DHT nodes.

If they want to post something it could be one of your friends, or you, or one of your friends friends, or one of your friends friends friends...  etc.

RS is built as an internal friend2friend network, so anonymity only goes to some extent.
Tor is created mainly to provide anonymous access to the internet, which it is quite good at, the hidden services however are horribly slow compared to I2P.
I2P is built as an anonymous internal network and uses a zero-trust philosoply, which is great i think. It can have high speeds but people don't seem to be interested in it somehow, it only has a few active users i think. However it's impossible to tell the amount of users or usage.
Then there's FreeNet, which is also a great tool, they claim to have a fairly big user base (about 20k i think?) but the community also seems very dormant.

I think we're just not getting spied on enough yet for people to look for alternative ways of communicating and sharing information. But that goes for Bitcoin too i guess... Until the shit hits the fan... Then it's too late

Anyway i'll leave the node running for a while see if i can get me a small network.
