Looks like the Jap cops are going to hit him for fraud. while I don't have a crystal ball, I think that dick deserves it. Japan should send him to the US where he'd get a real good long sentence and they'd put him in jail right away. Maybe they could put him in the cell right next to Ross the Pirate. In Japan, he'll be in the court for 8 years and then he'll only get 5 weeks of light scolding by an angry old lady. I was excited having read the title, thinking Karpeles will finally get jail time. I cannot find an alternate source for this piece of news? I read the article again: "The Tokyo Metropolitan Police is reportedly pursuing criminal charges against Mark Karpeles" This is speculation. Karpeles is still enjoying his frappuccino every morning while mixing he coins. Does the Japanese police have enough evidence to charge him for fraud? They need solid evidence to prove he did it, not weak evidence to proof he may have known coins were being stolen but failed to do anything about it. he is a poor guy.

the article doesn't seem to indicate that the Japanese have enough evidence to arrest him. so don't get your hopes up. I wonder if they'll ever arrest him without having him withdraw the stolen coins.

Hehh white Collar crime is only a few years in prison and its quite possible the BTC are (allegedly) stashed somewhere safe.
It can quite possibly be impossible for authorities to reclaim them.
I hope the culprit get what he deserve but people seem to be getting away with BTC crimes pretty easily...

True. When I was new to Bitcoin in 2013, I found it suspicious, that BTC price was higher on MtGox than on other sites. I registered, but I never deposited for that reason. |

I never deposited because I couldn't control the private keys. I've never kept anything more than satoshis on exchanges for that reason. So when it went down it didn't bother me.
However I remember some people who had their life savings on Gox and had to go back to work when they lost everything.

I would like to see that guy behind the bars for at least 20 years. Nothing else he deserves. But I hardly believe any japanese court will do me that favour. Everytime I see that crook I start to boil because of the damage he had caused.  |

Regarding the many, many coins stolen/compromised what is he (if he allegedly has access to them) going to do with them? He can't ever spend or move them can he? If he does that's all the evidence they need right there to lock him up & throw away the key? It's like having a gold mine under your house but you can't get access to it.

Firstly the addresses holding the stolen coins are at this point still unknown. Secondly, those coins if in his posession will have already been mixed. Thirdly, there is no proof that those coins existed at the time of the hack. It is inferred in the article that they were removed from mtGox a long time ago. Most likely by the 2011 hacker and less likeley embezled by Mark himself. |

So the story is he might be arrested soon, but hasn't been arrested yet?
Why would the Japanese police announce he's going to be arrested before arresting him? That would give him the opportunity to flee the country and head for Outer Mongolia, or somewhere else out of their reach.
He must have the money to charter a private plane or helicopter to fly him out unnoticed from some obscure airport.
