Mark Karpeles, the head of the collapsed MtGox bitcoin exchange who was arrested in Tokyo on suspicion that he artificially created $1 million in the virtual currency, admitted he tweaked the amount of a bitcoin account, claiming the move was to test a computer system, sources said Monday.

Before his arrest, Karpeles told the Nikkei business daily that he never misused customers’ funds and he still suspected outside hackers had been stealing bitcoins for years.

Sure Karpeles, we all believe you had the best of thoughts at heart when you started your swindle campaign. Have a piece of the Japo jail experience and then get back to me, k thx. Jail and fine this bitch and then let come what may at this point.

It seems like it is not that often we see justice in this crypto world.  I hope that the victims of the gox feel like they are getting a little payback, and I also hope that the sentence is not light.  Stealing money is stealing time, and I hate it when crooks get away with it.

Yeah right, now he will be saying whatever and that many things were coincidence and of course, it's outside hackers fault and if all of this doesn't work then it will probably be Bitcoin's fault at the end, just so he can get away or get the least prison time.

Well, things are not going like that Mark. You stole or fu**ed up the real people and you should pay. I haven't lost a single dime from Mt. Gox,I did lose money in BTER so I feel all the pain of the people that trusted you and you screwed them over!

It's a payback time!

Don't send any police force to Max Kerpeles, because he simply buy/outs them before they even reach him.

Now he has so much money he can buy laws, lawyers, police force etc etc. It is over, he won.

"Mark Karpeles, head of the collapsed Mt. Gox bitcoin exchange under arrest in Tokyo, is believed to have manipulated and padded his own cash account by tens of millions of dollars, far more than the $1 million on his arrest warrant, investigative sources alleged Monday."

...

Karpeles is suspected of manipulating data on the exchange’s computer system in 2013 to artificially create about $1 million in bitcoins. The police are also investigating his possible involvement in a massive loss of the virtual currency in 2014.

...

He is suspected of misusing the funds privately and sending them to his other firms.

The police will probably issue another warrant accusing him of professional embezzlement over the suspected misuse of funds, police sources said."

and soon the US will arrest Josh Garza too  Grin

The best thing Mark could do would be to not open his mouth. Anything he says will likely just be used against him. Nobody is going to believe he just innocently 'tweaked' an account.

He's probably going to get something along the lines of a 5 to 6 year incarceration and he'll be released afterwards with no charges. He'll probably have tons of hidden BTC somewhere and will remain a millionaire for the rest of his life. Would you be 5 years in jail to be released as a millionaire? maybe for some is a good deal.

I hope this guy sits in a cell next to Bernie Madoff for the rest of his years.  What a liar.

Is Karples still a French citizen, and can he be deported from Japan after serving his time there? I know he married while in Japan, but I don't know if he married a Japanese citizen. Reuters says his wife now lives in Canada and I know that to get US citizenship you have to be married and cohabiting for about 7 years. Maybe the US will extradite him after he's served his Japanese time, then he can do some time in a US jail.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/21/us-bitcoin-mtgox-karpeles-mother-idUSBREA3K01J20140421

Anne visited Karpeles in Japan, her first trip there, for 10 days from late-November last year, meeting his Japanese wife and their 2-year-old son Pierre.

"(The wife) has gone to Canada to live ... that didn't really help Mark, with all that's happening," Anne said, though she said she has more contact today with the wife than she does with her son.

Karpeles has nothing to do  with the US, there is no way as foreign citizen who did not commit any crime on US soil would be extradited to US, ever.
Only Japan have the right to judge him because he committed his fraud and his company was registered under Japanese jurisdiction.
Even if he is really married to US citizen woman, he has right to refuse trial in the US - if that ever happen.
