I don't know if this is allowed here, if not I'm sorry for it, just delete the thread.

Anyway, as I'm really curious on how many Bitcoin users are out there and it seems there's no reliable way to estimate it at the moment, I thought this could be a good try.
Quick, easy and inexpensive.
Just ask for subscription, spread the word, and let's see how many will join.

Also, remember: the more we are, the more reputation Bitcoin gains... so it's in our interest to manage to make this estimate.

Just sent a join request. Btw, is it only made on the 31st of July? Only 51 members at the time of this writing. Also, not so much discussion happening yet.

And only 2/3 of them interested in Bitcoin so of these 50 only these 2/3 remain as real Bitcoin users, but as it's at the beginning I think it's excused I'll try to gain as much attention as possible Cheesy

Thank you, but these are pages about Bitcoin itself.
There's plenty more around.
If I am a bitcoin user I don't necessarily want to subscribe to them as they can also keep publishing stuff I'm not really interested in.

My group is ONLY aimed at seeing how many we are.
I will write very very few posts in it.
This means, you join, it's a +1 in the number of users adopting bitcoin.
That's how I intend it.

Well that's good, but I think linking the social media accounts of bitcoin users are not that inviting because you know, bitcoin users want anonymity and all that stuff--linking their social media accounts is actually against that concept. Btw, thanks for accepting my join request. Hope this goes smoothly as possible. Smiley

Well if everyone joins a Facebook group then everyone will be identifiable.

Uhhh so what? You scared? Something dirty going on??? Cheesy

Nobody will know the addresses you use anyway when you pay or receive money.
And I don't think everybody will join, an estimate will still be necessary, but I think that if the thing will run, it will get us to a much clearer number than with other methods.

Criminals will probably not join, and that's good Cheesy

So as dotthebeat said, btc users love their anonymity. How are you going to get accurate numbers if half the community will not participate?

Nice and neat idea you have. However, I wont be joining the group unless I create another new account. I was banned on Facebook for using fake identity last year. I'm not using Twitter as they are like Facebook. As others said in this thread, most Bitcoiner want to stay anonymous. I doubt this group will be able to count the number of Bitcoin users on Earth. Oh also, some country like China ban Facebook.

So sad! This profile does not appear as the #1 result (on anonymous) Google searches anymore.

Time to be active on the crypto forums again? Proud to be one of the few Legendary members of the Sparkie Red Dot!

Gonna put this on my resume if I ever join a cryptocurrency/blockchain industry!

Mhhhh ok I'll try to see if it's possible to render this anonymous, but I think the fact you join the group doesn't affect your privacy settings in any way: if you are not friend of somebody, nothing will be more visible than your name and the other settings you made public.
If you join, people will only know that you have some BTC or you want very much to buy some, and the data you made public anyway.

Mhhhh ok, but I don't care, in example.
And I'll take that into account when estimating the real number.
I may make a poll on this forum and ask if the user would disclose his Bitcoin adoption or not.

Thank you.
Other groups, though, as I wrote, are mostly oriented to give you news about Bitcoin or there are groups to increase awareness on Bitcoinmap, which is good, but different from what is this group aim. I won't be spamming anything, unless things evolve in a different direction. I only want to see how many of us are trusting Bitcoin and, well, don't care so much about "privacy".

I'll keep open the group to see how it goes, it would be nice to have a way to say people: "LOOK! WE ARE 1.5 MILLIONS OF REAL PEOPLE USING THIS." I think this would help somewhat pushing Bitcoin into the mainstream, and FB is a great medium for this.

I don't think that it were be some results with this initiative. There are hundred of peoples that don't like Facebook and don't have a profile there. Then, there are other hundred that haven't read this thread and so cannot join because have no knowledge about it. And maybe there must be another third group that are lazy people and don't bother to go to register to this group. I bet that the number of this group will not be more than 300. When the users of bitcoin are at least 1 million (I guess). Let's see how will go !!!

I don't think it's a good way of gauging the number of people who use bitcoin. I think a better approach would be counting the numbers of customers that KYC wallets/exchanges (eg. Coinbase) have to get a closer number - and even that would be inaccurate and well short of the actual numbers.

Short?
Actually, it looks like people make more than 1 wallet on webwallets.
Also, how can you have more users than wallets?
Anyway, it's been proved that there's a lot more wallets than people, many just register and let it there without funds. They are not Bitcoin adopters, just people that tested it.
Also, many people open many wallets, especially webwallets, I did it myself. I also tried many different clients on my pc and on my smartphone.
So the actual number is probably very inferior to the actual installs of any software and any registrations of webwallets.
This is why wallets are not a good way to estimate the number of USERS actually holding Bitcoins.

By KYC I meant wallets/exchanges that ask for identification like Coinbase. I don't think you can register two verified accounts on Coinbase as the same person. I'm not talking about regular web wallets like Blockchain.info that allow anyone to sign-up with an email.

Edit: Verified users of an exchange may have been a better way to put it.

You can't estimate the number of bitcoin users by making a facebook group.. Counting the number of forum members would yield comparatively better result than number of people who joined the group Cheesy

The problem with this approach is that those users that are verified are, surely, good users of Bitcoin. Probably traders, or venues owners.
BUT, there are a lot of other users that only use a wallet and surely don't want to register with ID check and stuff.

By the way, I came up with this Google Sheet to see how many Android Bitcoin wallets are installed.
I checked the most used wallets but if anybody got some that I jumped please mention it.

Given that Google doesn't disclose the exact amount of installs anymore, I adjusted to the middle of that min-max installs.
Then adjusted again to 70%, just to cut off some people that may have tried more than 1 wallet.
The result is around 1 million.
I would say 1 million of users have at least 1 wallet installed and using it, even if only to hold some coins or just tried it.

Then, we should add the number of pc wallets installed.
And then there's the webwallets.

Bitcoin is not like Ripple. We do not link social media accounts to our use of crypto currencies. It makes the targeting for hackers easier, if they can link you to Bitcoin and stalk you, to get to your coins. You might not care if it attract criminals, but most of us do.

Would everyone who are asked to join a group that own $100 000 in fiat, do that on social media? No, You would become a victim of a kidnapping or some other criminal action. Anonymity is there for a reason, it protects your financial privacy.  Roll Eyes

i think this is not a best way to estimate number of bitcoin users
as we know that facebook group is best way to spaming link and they could create multiple account for do that, and i think the best way is: estimate based on local exchanger
example:
In my country (indonesian)
There is a big local exchanger here (bitcoin.co.id)
and the member should verification their account wit identity proof (so there is no multiple account here)
and today there are 66.504 members has registered
so we can concluse that indonesian's bitcoiners more than 66.000 peoples
and then we can count the next country
But the problem is not at all countries have their own exchange site

Nobody knows how much BTC you have.
So don't be afraid to be kidnapped.
And people can't see your IP through Facebook.
The only thing people would know if you join the group would be that you are involved in Bitcoin somehow, that's all.

I think this is a good way probably.
Most Bitcoin adopters had probably gone through an official dealer like this.
I bought mine on Bitcoin.de.
The problem is: how many of them release the numbers?

so mulitple account or fake account still created
and finally i realized that estimate bitcoin user its so hard

are they trying to count how many BTC users or who are the BTC users?
"how many" is fine but "who is" that's a red flag to me if am to be asked

Well if everyone joins a Facebook group then everyone will be identifiable.

Uhhh so what? You scared? Something dirty going on??? Cheesy

Nobody will know the addresses you use anyway when you pay or receive money.
And I don't think everybody will join, an estimate will still be necessary, but I think that if the thing will run, it will get us to a much clearer number than with other methods.

Criminals will probably not join, and that's good Cheesy

So as dotthebeat said, btc users love their anonymity. How are you going to get accurate numbers if half the community will not participate?

the problem would be if one users will partecipate with multiple account, any way to determinate bitcoin via online is not actually feasible, you need their ID if you want to do have a real number

Look, I am a bitcoiner, but sorry, I would never join your group. Why you might ask?
Well all that NSA needs to do is check this group and would have a very nice list of Bitcoin users with their complete personal info! Too easy for them if you are asking me.

I like this answer. I have to add that I met many bitcoin users and among them are only few facebook users. This social network is highly disregarded in bitcoin community.
Bitcoin folks treasure anonymous approach of cryptocurrencies and freedom, facebook is a tool of invigilation and database for NSA. Giving them our IDs just like that would be bad idea.
Personally I don't use Facebook and I never will. You are a product if you are using facebook not an user.

Well... I would say that thinking NSA doesn't know if you use Bitcoin or not when you don't subscribe to FB and say this clearly is quite naive.

Echelon is not only tracing all communications of internet, but examining also voice calls and all text.

Now, imagine that you, from your cool pc, open up the Bitcoin wallet... VOILA' NSA knows  that at n.XX, Clever Street, Pasadena, where Genius Guy lives, somebody just connected to a Bitcoin node Cheesy you don't even need to make a transaction Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

How can you estimate the number of bitcoin users via Facebook? There are so many people who have over 1000 FB accounts and the count cannot be considered a valid one. Even polls and surveys are manipulated due to multiple entries by single users.

Just see the number of accounts here at bitcointalk if you want an estimate of Bitcoin users. It's probably pretty close to the number of actual users.

when it comes to facebook.. alot of the non fiat lovers/libertarians. etc do not use facebook
when it comes to bitcoin. alot of large investors dont want to link their personal info to outsiders. to prevent unwanted stalking/scamming/publicity
when it comes to facebook groups. man bitcoiners are too busy making businesses or investing to even want/have tme to be in a group.
when it comes to international populations, many people of other languages steer clear of english groups and stick to groups based in their own nationality

so i think that this method of trying to count users wont have very accurate results.

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

Facebook group just to estimate number of Bitcoin users is not the best idea, since people won't be interested in such purely statistical thing.
The best way to monitor growth of bitcoin users imho is by observing the number of wallets instead; even tho it's not accurate, it gets you the base idea on
just how much trend bitcoin community is having.

cheers

FB may not be the best choice, but wallets are surely worse, I explained before why.
On pc I downloaded and installed at least 5 different wallets.
As webwallets, I registered in many, maybe 10 or 15, just to see the interface and services offered.
On my smartphone I tried 5 wallets.
So it's easy to see that a single user can have have so many wallets.

Number of users in this forum? Not good anyway.
Lot of people don't like forums at all, they may use Bitcoin but not register here.
Users of this forum are an underestimation of actual userbase.

On the other side, there's plenty people that just live and see Bitcoin just a good method of payment to remain anonymous.
All this mania you get to not show that you use Bitcoin... if find it ridiculous.
NSA will know you use Bitcoin the moment you open your wallet on your pc and connect to the net.

And I'm tired of this dispute about the initiative.
Who wants to join, welcome.
The others, you will be out of the group! Cheesy

Your best bet, is to ask exchanges adhering to the KYC/AML regulations to post their totals on the forum. Duplication and sock puppets are then eliminated and you would get some clear totals of Bitcoin users per country. I have seen some totals being quoted within articles, but I do not know how accurate and updated they are.

I have 5 Facebook accounts, and I will join with 3 of them, just to inflate your totals a bit, how does that sound?

Your best bet, is to ask exchanges adhering to the KYC/AML regulations to post their totals on the forum. Duplication and sock puppets are then eliminated and you would get some clear totals of Bitcoin users per country. I have seen some totals being quoted within articles, but I do not know how accurate and updated they are.

I have 5 Facebook accounts, and I will join with 3 of them, just to inflate your totals a bit, how does that sound?

This is my biggest fear with something like this. People can intentionally mess up the stats. And I can imagine some people don't want to link their real identity to bitcoin yet.

Number of users in this forum? Not good anyway.
Lot of people don't like forums at all, they may use Bitcoin but not register here.
Users of this forum are an underestimation of actual userbase.

Underestimate? You have no clue about the number of alts / sock puppet accounts in this forum. Tongue
I personally won't be comfortable using my real world identity to join this facebook group.

Seems like you don't want to understand.
This forum users do not represent ALL the Bitcoin users AT ALL.
And I posted earlier up why, if you are curious.

That would just look a bit stupid.
As the large majority of people just makes one FB account and is not polemic by nature Wink

For one like him, we probably have 3 that won't join in fear of privacy.

This will be a pretty stupid move to join the forum, Facebook could track you down very easily if you want to remain anonymous then don't join it.

Actually the number of people doesn't matter. all we need is people using it and the market reflect how many users are there. And these wont reflect the real numbers too

There is just no way to estimate it accurately. As bitcoin is created for anonymity. And many people wont show up on these forums.

Bitcoin is created to fuck banks and stop slavery.
Anonymity is a collateral feature that HAD to be implemented.
On top of that, people would only know that you have some Bitcoin. So?
And on top of the top of that, NSA KNOWS you have something to do with Bitcoin when you launch your wallet and connect to a node  Roll Eyes
They control each and every connection, so they see from home at n.XX Dumb Street, where Genius Guy lives, somebody just opened a Bitcoin wallet, because you communicated with a Bitcoin node.

Also, remember: the more we are, the more reputation Bitcoin gains... so it's in our interest to manage to make this estimate.
can't log in facebook as it was blocked in my country. Grin

How can you estimate the number of bitcoin users via Facebook? There are so many people who have over 1000 FB accounts and the count cannot be considered a valid one. Even polls and surveys are manipulated due to multiple entries by single users.

Each and every method will not give an exact number.
It's just a try.

True that but if there was a method to log in each IP adress and where proxies wouldn't be allowed, that number would give a better and more accurate number rather than FB accounts IMHO (although there could be exceptions).

There surely are better methods, like in example if every node would compile a database of IP addresses we would probably have a very precise estimate of the number of Bitcoin users.
But that needs work from the Bitconi developers, I do what I can, and this is just a try.

there is already btc talk that give a good approx.
actually the users are:  525800
30% are clone and you don' have to count et voilà here there is the Bitcoin Users Number (approx)

If you think the whole world likes forums and waste time over them you are SO wrong, man.

no absolute, but a good part of people involved in bitcoin are here.
it's so hard estimate a number like this.
Probably you have to multiply for 3 4 times to get the real number of users, but instead of a like in a facebook page it's a better way...
(Eg, I will not click in any page because become the classic spam-bitcoin-related-page. And I hate this...)
