Sure get about five s-5's and run them in your dorm room Wink

Note I am kidding you. Dorm mining has limits.

Maybe a few quiet miners using a hundred watts.

Not loud s-5 miner using six hundred watts each.

It's also important to note the impact a miner will have on you in terms of heat an noise, in addition to the concerns I lived in s small dorm room, and a 600W loud heater (i.e. a single S5) would have made the room intolerable.

Mining is not for a college dorm room. And to be perfectly blunt, a good college education is WAY more valuable than the BTC you could mine. Pick a moderately useful major, and study hard. skip the BTC mining until you graduate.

One other thing I'll add that I expect you don't want to hear. If you are taking on any kind of debt for college education, do not spend more money than you would for a move and a pizza. BTC mining gear is really a risky proposition in terms of making money, and it's just as likely that you'll lose money as you will make money. Even if you don't lose money, you won't get rich. It's just not in the cards.

Sorry to be such a downer.

You could always get a 10 port USB hub and order 10 sidehack USB sticks and run them in a windowsill Smiley

Another option is something like 1 or 2 used cheap prospero X1 or a bitcrane T-110S on eBay as they are fairly quiet

it is not good idea at all. I mentioned it earlier in other posts but again: electricity costs are important factor when you are considering mining, but not only one. based on my experience, you have to also consider and answer those topics:

*space: you have to somehow secure physical access to your miner
*fire hazard: guess why 24/7 data-centers had smoke detectors and foam fire extinguishers..
*noise: yes, miners are noisy, usually at least like gaming workstations, time to time like enterprise grade servers
*heat: usually miners consumer hundreds of watts and only thing moving inside is fan - so you will get XXX watts of waste heat
*sleep: you literally can't sleep in same room, where is located your miner (if you don't want to face some health issues)
*support: will you be able to fix miner, replace fan or diagnose HW issue? any experience with linux?

the 100gh rocker box at about 110 watts is what he should run.  just point it at a solo pool

http://www.ebay.com/itm/R-Box-Rockminer-110-120GH-s-Bitcoin-ASIC-Miner-/252048346092?
cost 90 tack on a power supply   and run it solo the chance of a block is about

880 to 1 for this month  so for 9 months about 100 to 1

for 4 school years about  30 or 50 to one (adding some diff growth)

a block is worth about 7000

if he mines it for 36 months  on a pool it may earn 50 bucks  free power free power supply

But you'd need the power supply with the r-box

Bitcrane and prospero are plug and play.. Or USB hub on a desktop that's probably already on 24/7

Could see to get your hand on a S1. Maybe you could get one for 30$ and power it off your desktop PSU if you have the spare connector. Underclocked to lowest i think you get 130gh for a bit less than 130w.  The rest is as above.

But those thing are only truly really quiet in the cool.

Yeah i think so. I've had 2 in my room along with a GPU doing x11. And without air flow, it got hot as hell and the fan became fairly loud, we had that hot pass here where outdoor temp was 33c, 40c with humidity factor.

So very quiet, as long as the heat does not accumulate or ambient temp go too high. So just a thing to keep in mind for OP.

Rather than mining in your dorm room you are aware you can buy hashing power hosted at Hashnest? Just open an account and transfer some btc.

You will not have to deal with the noise and electric bills but return on your investment will not be as great as just running a miner yourself if your electric costs are low (Hashnest does have to make a profit after all.) That is if you just buy and hold, there are other options.

You might enjoy trading mining contracts at Hashnest. My experience is that you can make more money day trading your bitcoin at Hashnest than mining at home. There is a little bit of a learning curve but you do not have to invest much, you can get started with $50. If you happen to time an entry wrong and have to hold a losing position until you can sell for a profit you will be making mining income. If you need some advice on getting started you can read the article how to profit with Bitmain Hashnest and good luck trading!

Well, if you can get your hands on some cheap and silent miners, might be worth trying.
Cause if you put big miners in your dorm you will drive everybody insane from the noise and heat

I will give you honest answers.  If you are living in a dorm it will be a pain.  Even quiet miners put out heat.   So you would need to go with quiet and remain small.

If in apartments you have much more choices.  If you have a max electricity price with student apartment and have an extra room go for it.  I myself had roommates so did not have that extra rooms. And I was not a jerk so I did not mine and raise my roomates rates.

Also before doing it check your contract.  And yes they can be long and boring.   But I bet if they do a room check and find a bunch of machines they will not like it.   Might put a label of something not scary as they do report to head of housing apartments if looks to funny.   The one i was in last checked every few months that it still looked decent, and you were not tearing up the place.

So I found that the only thing stopping you from making a profit w/ BTC mining is how much it cost to mine BTC vs the amount of $ electricity cost so is BTC mining in college a good idea? B/c you pay room and board as a single price and not the electricity bill directly

It may be free but I bet someone will notice and complain/cut you off if your rig generates too much noise, heat, electricity or is deemed a fire risk

this -only do it if you can pass off that its for heating.
