Bayer Leverkusen have appointed Kasper Hjulmand as head coach following the sacking of Erik ten Hag last week after just two games in charge.

The former Denmark coach has signed a contract until the summer of 2027 with the Bundesliga club.

The 53-year-old Dane guided his country to the European Championship semi-finals in 2021, where they narrowly lost to England after extra time.

"It is an honour to be entrusted with such a team," Hjulmand said.

"I am now very motivated to help shape the future of Bayer Leverkusen with both established and exciting new players."

Hjulmand's appointment ends a turbulent period for the club who dismissed former Manchester United boss Ten Hag on 1 September.

The Dutchman had succeeded Xabi Alonso, who took Leverkusen to an unbeaten league and cup Double in 2023-24 - the club's first Bundesliga title - before departing for Real Madrid in the summer.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said hiring Ten Hag was an error, but letting him continue would have been "an even bigger mistake".

There is something that happened internally that the media hasn't gotten the full story on. Eric Ten hag removal from Bayer Leverkusen is partly because of the poor performance they have had recently but for a team that lost a good number of their first eleven I don't think much was expected from them.

Xabi Alonso leaving Bayer leverkusen has really affected them and couple with the fact that alot of their big stars too have left the club so it will take some time before any coach will get things all working with that club again. The best thing to hold onto is the fact that they have achieved alot and with that they can just try to settle and accumulate players so that they can get things all working again so they can meet up with the standard already set in the club.

Kasper Hjulmand it is then! Next game for Leverkusen is going to be a home one against Frankfurt. One of the toughest fixtures... Leverkusen have 2.35 odds for the win. I'm thinking of betting on them for fun. 

You can't really blame Leverkusen by doing that. Their decision to sack ETH might come from so many consideration following how poor club's performance. I don't think they sacked Ten Hag for no reason.  Sometimes, a manager who spent a lot might not able utilize his new player, but when others come may be giving different result. There is no also guarantee he will success with his signings.
They may not take the risk by keeping him much longer. They save their club before Ten Hag destroys it. There will always be good and bad side depending on the perspective.

But it is only 2 games man. How can one person judge a manager from such a limited time period? For example what would you do?

I think ultimately a coach should have a say in player transfers, but in this particular case literally everyone knew beforehand how many clubs were after some of the most important Leverkusen players and I am sure ten Hag was not hired based on false promises. They probably told him that there will be several players leaving the club. It is normal for every coach to express their discontent about good players going away, but he was aware this could be happening. What did he think? That Leverkusen can turn down these big offers and keep the players instead? He can't complain about something that everyone saw coming anyway.

Apart from that I think Leverkusen immediately came under pressure not only due to the results of those games, but due to how they played. Yes it needs time to build a team, but let's assume that the sporting director of Leverkusen was concerned about how ten Hag set everything up, how he communicated and how he conducted his training sessions, what should Rolfes have done before this long Bundesliga break? I don't know, but if he didn't act and they had lost the next two games after that break, he would have been at serious risk himself (which I think he should be anyways).

A name that is quite unfamiliar, even though I knew him previously when he coached Denmark, but to be honest, I don't know much about this coach's career.
However, there may be other considerations, especially since we know that in recent years Denmark has also been quite good under his coaching (though there have been ups and downs), but they haven’t been too badly off. Still, appointing Hjulmand as coach is also a gamble in the end, because there will always be doubts before he can truly contribute to the squad.

On the other hand, this is still far better than forcing Ten Hag into the role, as I still feel that replacing Ten Hag quickly, even if it seemed a bit rushed, was still a very good decision to make.
Hopefully, Hjulmand can address the doubts of many parties, including myself, at this time.

It is part of the game to make mistakes but the management of Bayern Leverkusen don't seem to understand that they've made alot of mistakes. When a teams looses, it is right to blame the coach but don't be insensitive to individual players input in the game and underlying reasons. The season is new and I think this may destabilise the team for sometime and they are definitely out of the title race because there's already tension in the team. I recently read about how Simon Rolfes and Fernando carro turned their backs at Erik Ten Hag  due to poor dressing room management and disagreement with most of his assistants leading to his brutal sack. I hope Bayern Leverkusen regains their place in the Bundesliga maybe by next season.

They have signed a new coach today, he happens to be a former head coach of Denmark. I am really anticipating to see what this coach is going to show in this team. If he’s able to make this team better than they were before, then Eric Ten Hag would be blamed for their poor form and the sacking might just have been the best for the team that they did on him.
