I made it up for a fantasy role-playing game when I was 13 or 14, and then used it for every browser-based game I played. I ended up using it for every site so I wouldn't have to remember multiple usernames. It's supposed to sound like an appropriate name for a wizard or something.

It's nice and unique, but I sometimes wish that I had chosen something more meaningful.

Makes me think about thermos. Coffee anyone ?

it was a nickname given to me while I was in the Cornhusker Marching Band (1992).  I played sousaphone.
 
During tryouts (I was an incoming freshman to UNL) I found a feather on the field and stuck it in my hat for good luck.  The tuba line leader started calling me "tonto" (after the Native American "Tonto" in "The Lone Ranger") and it stuck
