I am not an electrician. Can somebody please tell me if I can run one of these on a standard outlet for an apartment in the USA? I would buy the power supply that bitmain sells.

Yes. It only uses around 12 amps I believe. Most U.S. circuits are at least 15 amps, and yours are probably 20 amps. As long as you don't have a bunch of other things plugged in on the same circuit you should be fine.

Normal circuits in US homes will be 15 amp breakers. Which can take peak power pulls of 1,800 watts (120v x 15amp = 1,800 watts).  However breakers are rated to hold a constant power draw of 80%, which is only continuous 1,440 watts. So you could run a S7 on your regular outlet, but i would highly advice not to have anything else plugged into that circuit. Remember, each circuit will usually have several plugs attached to it. So you might want to do some testing of plugs while turning off breakers to determine which plugs are connected to each breaker.

If you have a 20 amp breaker, It can peak at 2,400 watts (120v x 20amp = 2,400watts). Keep in mind that you should only continuously use 80% of that, which is 1,920 watts. Lets all make sure to practice safety when mining, we don't want any burnt down houses for a few bitcoins!!!!!

That is a million years away.  By the time halving arrives, each and every S7 will have long been tossed in the bin.  Miner lifetime is far shorter than that.

Just to be clear, "A million years away" is roughly July of NEXT year (i.e. 2016)! I didn't expect to make it to a million years of age....

Just to add the ROI flame discussion ... don't we had the same war with the S5 price ? And we can like pretty much sell them today for the same price we paid 8 months ago ?

I know as for today this isn't the same situation (Bitmain vs Spon price war)

No ones can see in the future ...

July 2016 is 10 months or 300 days away.  Making this the perfect time to expand.  Since you should roi in 250 days with this gear.

Why would no one be running S7's when halving occurs next year?  I still got all my S3's hashing away. Just cannot bring myself to turn them off. I am still getting 2.7TH out of those old units.

Most old mining gear does not break even with electric cost so when the blocks half the amount the equipment earns will be cut in half. Will the equipment still run ...most likely but you will be better off to buy the coin instead of the electric.

In addition to the electrical supply in your apartment, remember that the S7 should be considered a LOUD 1200W heater. While nobody has tested one yet, every expectation is that it will be at least S5 loud. Think vacuum cleaner loud. Maybe Bitmain worked some magic, but the fans that are present are expected to be noisy and powerful to keep the 1200W blades cool enough. If that fits your apartment situation, then you'll be good.

Along with the above I will do a very long and through review.  Sound meters.  Different fans. ways to reduce noise.

That said.  At best  it will be 72-77db  and nasty pitched when it arrives.

I think I can do 65db and better pitch sound with high hash say 4400-4800.

I know I can do  45db to 50db with downclock to 3000gh

I hope I can do   45db 3000gh  and .18 to .20 watts.  with downclock and voltage drops.

..so somebody thinks here, that there is any bitcoin hardware manufacturer, which is selling mining gear with profit for customer (so you can mine more BTC, than the miner costs in BTC) in 2015?:)

after all those bubbles, pre-orders, scams, shills, courts, layers and bankruptcies..

no my dears, I'm so sorry but why they should do it instead of mining by themselves in country, with one of the cheapest electricity in known universe? Xian, Tigger and other smart guys are right. you will never ever even ROI your BTC with this fancy noisy chinese box..

I'm so sad for guys hunting some coupons here:(

That's where his points are right.
I do not mine for fun, i do it because it's fun to mine with my gear and make some BTC for later on. With this price and diff i stick with my old gear and hope for the BTC to rise  Cheesy
If you can afford 1,xKWH just for fun then you are a lucky guy, but the home miners do consider them selfs as part of the game and we want our chunks also  Grin
It would be funny to see who is mining at $100/BTC or lower.
I believe some bigger farms are getting in real trouble then  Wink

uhh, what is "funny" on sending ~2k USD to some chinese strangers? I'm trying really hard, but I don't see any "fun" aspect. Unbox, plug and play and time to time click broswe and upload new firmware..this is what you are calling "fun"?

if yes, you really don't know what "fun" for geeks is, but believe or not, it is not overpriced noisy box from China and you don't need to invest 2k USD to enjoy it, really.

Fun stuff would be cheap things like sidehacks USB sticks, whilst they are unlikely to ROI you can use them as a lottery ticket and solo mine, but I agree 2k for fun is not for me.

Real fun vanished at the end of the GPU era, so many combinations of things to try fancy rigs to be built and new firmwares and bios and drivers, and all the associated tweaking of clock speeds and voltages trying to get the most from every type of card.

I think we are just to old in the BTC game Smiley

While GPUs were fun I wouldn't want to do it again. Once is enough Smiley

Trying new types of hardware is fun for some people, to each their own I guess. 8 BTC is a hefty sum but not that much compared to the shit other people waste their money on under a pretense of a "hobby" Grin
