Yes even without an ETF, Bitcoin could reach the $2000 this year!
An ETF could have several risks, which Vinny Lingham explained pretty well in his blog post on medium.

I recommend to read the following article. The author describes the 3 ETFs which are actually in the pipeline and speaks of probability of greater than 50% one of the ETFs getting approved. Way too optimistic prediction imo.

For the same reasons you've stated, I really wish that we don't have ETF this year.
But whatever the end result is, it's our fate and we must accept it and deal with it, our journey is just starting and it won't be easy
