Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

I think the strongest case to be made for Bitcoin is that no matter how oppressive a political system is in opposition to private ownership, as long as there is somewhere on the earth that has private property rights that bitcoin will not only survive there, but also even in the black markets of everywhere on Earth that it is banned. The absolute autonomy of property rights and store of value with its immunity from inflation acknowledged by the basic concept and construct of Bitcoin is exactly why it WILL be the world's preferred reserve currency some day.
