Please do not sell hash power like this.

Services like Hashpower and GPUmax are fundamentally bad for Bitcoin. They decrease the security of the network and increase the risk of double spends. They are inherently against the basic design of Bitcoin which is that by mining, miners express their support for a particular chain. By selling your hash power to anonymous miners who may or may not be doing things you would agree with, you make it radically easier to mount an attack on the network.

If the owners of hashpower.com were here, I would ask them to shut their service down. But as they aren't, I will ask you to boycott it instead.

Never forget that mining is voting. It is not just a way to make a quick buck. If you sell your shares you are selling your votes.

Man, we should boycott pools under the same premise. I don't want them controlling my.. hehe.. "votes"...

Have you even ever read Satoshis paper? Why don't you do that now.

http://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

From the conclusion:

Quote
Nodes can leave  and  rejoin  the  network  at  will,  accepting  the  proof-of-work  chain  as  proof  of  what happened while they were gone.  They vote with their CPU power, expressing their acceptance of valid blocks by working on extending them and rejecting invalid blocks by refusing to work on them.  Any needed rules and incentives can be enforced with this consensus mechanism.

Satoshi explicitly stated that doing a proof of work is voting.

And yes, centralized pools are also a problem which p2pool was designed to solve - but at least you know who you are selling to, and you can judge their reputation. With hashpower.com you don't have any idea where your shares end up.

So I will say it again. Do not use hashpower or similar services. It undermines the security of the system we all use. If you don't understand what you're doing by mining you should not be doing it.

Hashpower is far more transparent than GPUmax.  You see where the hashes are going and the total power.

Right now at 250 Gh/s it is ~ 1% of the total network.  Your claims are rather alarmist...

Hashpower is far more transparent than GPUmax.  You see where the hashes are going and the total power.

All Hashpower needs is a username. How do you know what is being done with your hash power? In particular, you don't have any way to know that the buyer isn't simply executing a Finney double spend attack against a merchant who is trying to accept unconfirmed transactions.

Quote

If somebody managed to buy 1% of the votes in the an election, would people shrug and say "no big deal"? Of course not. They would freak out because somebody was using their money to undermine democracy. There's no level of vote buying where you can just shrug it off and say "well 5% is bad, but 1% is ok".

Don't sell shares. Use them to mine against a Bitcoin node that has behaviour you agree with. Which probably means "is following the default Bitcoin ruleset", possibly with a different fee policy. But you definitely don't want to find yourself mining on a side chain that is trying to double spend against legitimate merchants.

I tried to setup some leases on this website and it seems near impossible.  You can't send bitcoins directly to fund your account.  You have to get a we-exchange account and that is by invite only.  They do recommend to go to an irc room to get a we-exchange account invite but then state don't be to demanding.  Not a very user friendly service.

I had gotten my invite from Graet all I did was send him a pm asking for one.  Though I do intend to use not only for Hashpower but I'm waiting a little for the Canadian market to pick up before trying it out.

So far I'm happy with the service and it's on par with Gpumax.  I don't really see the sensationalizing, alarmist talk about these services.  I've pointed my BFL Single crunching away at 800mhash/s and honestly as a miner I do not in any way shape or form care where my hashes go.  On this site you are limited to what mining pools you can set your worker to so it isn't like I'm selling off my power for some nefarious purpose.  I've mined on most of these pools at some point in the past and just switch around on a whim.  Why not bitch and complain about abcpool? Isn't that the same idea? Or what about people who purchase shares just off of the forum? Why aren't you giving gigavps shit?

Don't get me wrong, I support Bitcoin but I also go where the money is.

Just connect your miner to http://hashpower.com:80 with the obtained username/password
Use a compatible mining pool and all will just work fine  Grin

Cool idea, but I'm not on WeExchange yet.  Huh

Anyone have a code handy?

One question though, there is no mention of how quickly the leased shares will be delivered. Will it be over 1 hour? 1 week? the next 10 difficulty changes?

Got one on IRC #hashpower, thanks Ukto!

It looks like the execution is ASAP based on capacity. I'm assuming that means that the more shares that are available the faster you are going to complete yours.

On the mining side, it's easy since the payout is ~105%.

For the lessors the idea is to be able to "burst" your hashing capacity if you feel you can gain an advantage in doing so.

Find a pool overdue for a block, throw a bunch of hashing power at it, collect bonus for finding block (or get a bunch of shares loaded in at the end of the weighting period I suppose.)

There are a few unscrupulous things someone could do with enough hashing power, a couple nefarious ones, and several reasonable uses.

There is also the interesting question as to what happens if the difficulty goes down...

Of if someone buys up 5-10% of all hashing power and routes it to a null pool to get the difficulty to GO down (like paying farmers to NOT grow corn.) (not sure of the motivation WHY you would waste BTC this way)

Heh, if I'm right we might get some government or other large entity paying folks NOT to mine BTC at some point in the future. Who says you can't regulate bitcoin? Maybe we can all get bailouts by the time we split to 12.5!   Grin

Miners should be able to set the minimum they will mine at and then purchasers could see how much GH/s they would be getting at the price they are looking to buy.

Love the site, great work.

BTW, when I login, it takes two tries before I actually do. The first time just sends me back to the main page, then I log in a second time and it works. I'm on Chromium 20.0.1132.47.

I have the same problem with logging in, also I think a minimum mining value might be useful... at the moment it looks to be around 104% PPS and the rest goes to HashPower?

Yes.. the hashpower only gets about 5%.

Lots of people have provided feedback on how buy and leasing should be handled. At this time this is market based leasing in which minimum leasing is 105%. There is an api that can be used for scripts to monitor leasing and leasing price. Scripts can be made to use this as they see fit. (Selling min order)

There is many things in the works and I am sure things will be added. Hashpower is still in very young stages and can be adapted in many ways.

How about mining on 443?

Some ISP's are meddling with port 80 requests in order to feed spam ads, I know cause mine is doing it  Sad

It's affecting my mining efficiency as you can see on my GPU usage:

A longer term solution would be to get a second port. Short term setup CGminer with a backup pool and your gpu should stay busy. Instead of waiting for work (getting ads) it should work on work from a backup pool. It will keep as much hashpower going to hashpower as possible while keeping your GPU's busy.

For me something is wrong with WeExchange. I can not withdraw bitcoins from hashpower despite

Also my bitcoins have been taken but never credited on my hashpower account or actually marked as being sent properly on WeExchange

So I guess my point is that since I am unable to link without it appears providing them with enough info to actually use my identity I get to see this on hashpowers website.

I have opened a support ticket over the 1BTC that is so far misplaced. As far as the rest setting it up seems to require a lot of information I really wonder about giving out. It seems maybe Graet is in charge and that is all well and fine. He seems very nice. I am sure it will get handled.

Think of it as a warning. The actual linking of hashpower seems to be missing the click on the "Link Merchant!" box step in the instructions. For me after that it didn't seem to link. I really should have concidered that the minimum 1BTC deposit wasn't required and could get lost. This is a new service. So what I should have done was not tried depositing it. I apparently should have waited patiently. Will add when this is solved or delt with.

hi Askit2
Ukto has credited your account and properly linked your WeExchange and Hashpower accounts.
It should work correctly now.

For clarification Ukto runs Hashpower and is US Director of WeExchange
I am Australian Director of WeExchange and run Ozcoin Pooled Mining
Some people seem to be confusing some of this Smiley

The credit did come through. I am very happy that this was a I hope quick fix. I can without a ton of hassle or personal info apparently get bitcoins moved around just like I wanted. The payout once linked is super fast.

As far as the Graet thing I mentioned I only ment in charge of WeExchange. I realize that it was both misleading and because of my wording just plain wrong.

The account didn't link properly. I linked it again now I can withdraw. No idea why it works but I have 2 HashPowers on WeExchange and I can move BTC around.

Thanks for your help.

Hey guys,

i have 2 questions:

- when i am able to add more than 3 workers?
- Is there a known problem with BTC Miner? Got some issues, "wrong protocol" have no logs but i remember anything with "//". I cant mine with Cgminer and ztex due problems with a FPGA on one of my quads.

I add some logs tomorrow.

As far as CGminer check out their thread. Kano and Con are really helpful. I would be amazed if they couldn't get you setup.

I saw on IRC that much more than 300Gh/s pointed here causes issues. What plans do you have to handle more load? Not complaining, just curious.

People have been selling their votes even since votes were invented tho.

My Credentials  | THE BTC Stock Exchange | I have my very own anthology! | Use bitcointa.lk, it's like this one but better.

By the logic of don't sell your votes no one should use pools either. Seems like bad advice for the little miners.

Paranoia aside the only people with the power to do what you suggest would be a Pool op. Assuming they would do it anyways ( I personally think few if any would.) the losses to them personally after the attack would be (I believe) staggaring. To do what is suggested one has to be able to actually pick what chain the pool is working on and pay for a large enough run to fork it. That wouldn't be some unknown miner on a pool. They don't pick the block to work on. Plus it wouldn't be cheap. Luck matters, it could be a smallish purchase but it likely wouldn't.

I do understand the fear. I just think its misplaced. I get that a double spend or hostile fork is the reason behind the top pools having a limited amount of hashing power.

i tried with and without port 80. with "www" and without.

i tried with phoenix, poclbm and cpuminer. nothing works.

i tried with other clients such as command-line curl or wget to access the mining url with a post parameter.

sniffing packet i can see your server always returns the mainpage of your site.

you should consider rewriting of the routine, that distinguished between a browser accessing the mainpage and a miner connecting to the url. simply check if a http-auth is there then serve the pool proxy, if no auth, send the website.

strange that i am the only one with this problem. brings up some thoughts...

My issue was fixed in 24 hours or less. The Exchange works. But as a new service there have been some hiccups.

If you don't feel safe using this service I would suggest not using it. I myself only use cgminer at this time so I cant/wont support anything else as far as setup.

I know the developer is looking more at variable diff then anything else right now. This is the main focus at this time for asic.

Hamdi, it is probably something on your end as everyone else seems to be mining fine via HashPower... either a problem with your internal network or your ISP?

it is not his pool... even though he tries to help people
actually it isnt even a pool - but no need to discuss that at the moment.

could you paste your cgminer command line?
or try
cgminer.exe -o http://hashpower.com -u JpnlHIPm -p cOtVTmn2
or
./cgminer -o http://hashpower.com -u JpnlHIPm -p cOtVTmn2
depending on operating system

I couldn't connect with Phoenix, but with Cgminer had no issue.

I'd also prefer Phoenix for the very same reason (I get 2% higher hashrate than with Cgminer)

Anybody knows why Phoenix can't connect? Perhaps it's because their system won't distinguish between Phoenix and a browser's request?

don't know what's so hard in fixing this.

it would bring them more miners.

you should consider rewriting of the routine, that distinguished between a browser accessing the mainpage and a miner connecting to the url. simply check if a http-auth is there then serve the pool proxy, if no auth, send the website.

i also tried CGMINER, and also that does not work.

are you really not interested in people mining on your "pool" ??

No. I can give a shit less if you figure it out.. over 100 other people have no problem.

BTW.. i dont own or run Hashpower. I just happen to make the post on this forum.

Not sure why this happens but I get crazy high rejects.
Right now I am at
253 Rejected 1Hr with 521 Accepted 1Hr making it 32.69% Rejected 1Hr.

I keep missing what triggers it. I currently have a 15s scan time and 60s expiry on cgminer so I shouldn't get anything approaching that high with 1BFL single. I may get 12 que'd and 3-5 for the scan time. When this happens I get a wall of rejects until pool is marked rejecting and I am moved to a backup pool.

If I am watching it I can switch to any other pool, wait a second or three, then switch back to hashpower and I will immediately get work that doesn't get rejected. I am currently assuming the problem is with the work I am getting but I do not know for sure. What I do know is it would take 35 rejects in a row to get a pool marked as rejecting and to hit that I need several work units that have 100% rejected. To be brutally honest I would need a little under 12 getworks all with 100% rejected shares in a row or about 175 seconds of rejected work in total.

I hope I have missed a setting that would correct this.

Thanks.

I'm getting this with cgminer:

No suitable long-poll found for pool http://hashpower.com

Is long-polling really not supported, or is there something wrong? My rejects seem to be quite high.

EDIT: Never mind, this seems to be a problem with the new cgminer 2.9.1.

Feature Request:  Automatic failover to offline pool when rejects go over 5-10% (depending on leasing market rate).

It's not worth the extra PPS when rejects are too high, and a PITA to constantly monitor/calculate/switch for this.

Thanks for that heads up.

Yeah, thanks for the explanation Graet.

This emphasizes what I said earlier about the need for Hashpower being able to detect and disable pools with high (5%-100%) rejects.

Also, having more than one offline pool is important for similar reasons.

Nobody's miners should be stuck pointed at dead/failing pools.

I don't know how but I accidentally the entire Hashpower.   Huh

Was just trying to deselect "offline only" and now the mining worker won't save info for any offline pool (coinlab, guild, or slush).

Maybe this has something to do with the 10k share buy that hasn't been processed?

Edit:  Worker1 is still processing leased shares, but still won't save any settings for an offline pool.   Undecided

CGMiner shows ~2% rejects but account page shows none.  Also says 0% Accepted but pending funds show they are.

Quote
12,920 Accepted 1Hr
   0.00% Accepted 1Hr
0 Rejected 1Hr
   0.00% Rejected 1Hr

0% rejects is not possible on stratum, much less LP...   Huh
Backup pool not enabled, but offline shares are still going up...   Huh

I'm going to make a new account, this one is FUBAR.

I made a new account and never enabled an offline pool.

Offline pool (BTCGuild) doesn't show any shares submitted.

Yet Hashpower shows 3,134 Offline?  WTF?  Where are 1% of my shares going?

At least rejects are low.   Undecided

So how does hashpower work with higher then 1 difficulty shares? I only ask because with a difficulty 100 showing up I am unsure how I get paid for it.

Edit: Hashpower shows the following.
last price
0.00000819
Eclipse PPS
0.00000800
Seems a little short for the difficulty.

Edit 2:
Why don't we submit all difficulty 1 shares and hashpower only passes on ones that meet the requested difficutly? It makes more sense to me since hashpower doesn't show a higher pay for higher difficulty. Since it takes longer to make one share it really should pay more. I have no idea if I am being paid the 100X for the higher difficulty.

If and when greater than diff1 is running (which is very rare right now and only when I am testing)
You get paid for X shares.
If its diff10, you get credited 10 shares.

I am adding a vardiff option to workers soon.

Ok I believe you.
Why diff100 for testing though?
Also user selectable vardiff?
Thanks!

It was working great for the last few days.

Now, 125,000 shares on the market but nothing is happening.

Worker Stats showing negative (>1%) rejects and >1% offline.  But I never set up an offline.   Huh

Could you add a field that would really help me out?
I would be interested in a pay compared to PPS. This as a percent or decimal would work fine.
My over 1% regularly reject ratio make the lower 102% or come close to netting out.
For easier control maybe let miners set a pay that makes sense to them with this service.
Thank You.

Well The banner of text when trying to not run on vardiff isn't calming. Hopefully a way to actually control what the workers work for and vardiff are in the works.

I wonder why there is either diagnostic info there or just random crap. Either way I don't see why it would be there and after 5 days I can't imagine why the operator wouldn't let people either know why or check to see how the "pool" is doing.

I apologize in advance if this ends up sounding a bit harsh (I don't mean it that way), but just ran a quick calculation on current payout:

difficulty: 3275465
pure PPS: 0.00000763 BTC/share
Hashpower.com: 0.00000797 BTC/share

So Hashpower is paying out 797/763 or 104% PPS.

When you consider it does NOT payout transaction fees nor does it pay merged mining profit back to the miners, I have to question what the actual benefit of this service is to miners. The available hashrate seen on the Dashboard is typically between 50-100GH, which is small compared to its predecessor GPUMax (which was peaking around 150% PPS but usually in the 110%-120% range towards the end).

I do like the idea of Hashpower and think there is a demand for such a service. But, speaking as miner, I think the payout formula isn't advantageous enough; essentially the same payout would be expected out of any one of the fee-free DGM pools (which DO pay transaction fees AND merged mining).

The only potential benefit (for a miner) in using Hashpower is that it is true 'pay per share'; that is, zero variance. If a miner would normally mine at a fee-based PPS pool then Hashpower can make more sense. For example, the Eclipse PPS rate is currently 0.00000725, which makes Hashpower's rate of 0.00000797 (even though Hashpower does not pay transaction fees or merged mining) a bit more attractive.

But for regular DGM miners, I'm not sure that there is a benefit. Hashpower's 104% PPS is not a lot when you consider you'd be earning about as much on a free DGM pool (100% PPS + 2% transaction fees + 1% merged mining). Hashpower (at least not currently) also does not support >1 difficulty shares or GBT or Stratum so stales are higher than they would otherwise be.

Are there any plans to review Hashpower's fee and payout structure to better align it with the current mining environment?

Good points Epoch.

Also consider that proxied getworks from hashpower have much higher reject/stales than a stratum pool.

I hope they fix the much higher then stratum Rejects. I can't afford to use hashpower as the rejects kill any small % gain over 100% I would get.
Either that or let people decide at what pay they will actually want to mine. For me 2-3% rejects reliably will drop the slight bonus to non-existant.

I would happily mine for hashpower reliably if either rejects are about what they are at Eclipse for me <.12% or I could bump my minimum to a % that I choose. Actually a % that I choose is even a little lacking as it ignores rejects but I am betting it could be set suitably high to account for the up to 10% rejects I have seen.

Hopefully this turns out as miner friendly as GPUMax was.

How can I point it at a private/custom pool server?
