Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

I think having some cryptonote coins there (e.g. monero, boolberry) could be useful.

I love Alts, but how can they even compete with Bitcoin in terms of what -most- people are interested in when it comes to cryptos?

What most people are interested in isn't cryptos. So, maybe, just maybe, Bitcoin isn't the Holy One.

I voted Bitcoin but a poll excluding it is probably more interesting.
It doesn't really seem like any of the newer coins have captured the attention and investment of Bitcoin, but at the same time everyone knows Bitcoin, not much to discuss there.

I voted for Monero based on the currently available choices but would also like to see Boolberry added to the poll.

I first became interested in Anoncoin because of Zerocoin. When that never arrived I became more interested in CryptoNote. Of the existing CryptoNote coins I think Boolberry is most advanced in terms of scaling and mixin issues. If Zerocash arrives next year and all trust issues are resolved then that may become the hottest coin. Boolberry is the best anonymous coin today https://twitter.com/matthew_d_green/status/648221218773049344"A few people have asked about Zerocash. I've been keeping quiet about this because we're working hard, not because it's been dropped."

ETH and BTS are still one of the hottest altcoin although their volume have dropped a lot. Someone is accumulating these coins now that it is quiet before the upward trend starts again.

Those are both great options. Can Augur be added to the poll please?

Augur is not trading yet. The crowdsale just ended.
