I don't understand. Which applications? All of the Bitcoin software you can download from official Web sites. You can check them for viruses on www.virustotal.com.

You can also check all of the Sha hashes provided with Sha calculator. In this way you can be sure that the hashes match and that nobody has messed with the softwares.

The official core wallet is at https://bitcoin.org/en/
From there go to getting started, choose your wallet, then that has a link to all other wallets. I recommend a SPV one to avoid hours of syncing time and taking up tons of space for the Block chain unless that is not a problem for you.

Honestly you should not really be surfing the web or downloading things on a computer with a wallet.  It's asking for trouble eventually.

I suggest looking into cold storage if you really are going to download a lot to it of anything.

whatever you want to download, you should take these two steps:

1) always try and find their official website for downloading the application. this way you can be 50% sure that you are downloading the right thing.

2) for the other 50% learn how to check the downloaded file's signature with the author's signature. this way you can make sure that you have downloaded the correct thing.

VMware or others do help a lot.  It is still possible for some 0-day virus to get past for example when this happened - https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2015/05/14/the-venom-virtual-machine-escape-bug-what-you-need-to-know/ (SFW link that is name of securityblog at front)

So some have managed to get to host machine.   I would try to use separate computers if at all possible.  But I'm over cautious.

Shit and some of you guys say that i`m paranoid.

I get the idea that you hold large amount of bitcoin, but its just better to hold it offline, and then not have to worry about what your download online.

Before bank account logins you just rescan your PC, and they have 2FA anyway so its not like they will hack your bank account.

Can you be more specific about what kind of bitcoin apps you want to download (whether a wallet or a faucet or something). The first thing that popped up to my mind was some sort of mobile apps Cheesy Well if that's what you're asking then just take a look on the google play store and apps there were safe to download. But if you want to downloads applications on your PC from any website, just make sure to turn on your anti virus to detect malwares.

based on this (VMWare and Microsoft Hyper-V are popular virtualisers that do not contain QEMU code, being independently-written proprietary products.)

vmware is not affected and i'm running vmware workstation pro 12, it's a very powerful virtual machien you can do everything with, i've used it in the past to connect my host to it and instamine altcoin, that i thought were dangerous

For choose a bitcoin wallet, you can go to https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet and choose a safe wallet, use cold wallet, avoid web wallet and exchanges wallet for storing your all coins.

For bitcoin app better to research first before download it , use virustotal.com to scan, and if you still doubt you can ask on this forum.

Use virustotal and use only developers/officials apps websites. Never 3rd party ones.

Is this Virustotal is a reliable source for detecting any virus on the downloading applications? I have not heard about their services. But I guess it would be more useful when we mistakenly download applications from the wrong sites.

Well yes. It run through a server that run it through all the detection libraries list it display. Its not new at all, but you should not need it in the first place(for this, its actually pretty useful otherwise), if you dont download crap from shifty website.

Stick to bitcoin.org and the direct links to different wallets and you'll be a-ok.

Yep i found it a very useful virus checking tool, you can also check the download link first before downloading, that way you can definitely make sure no virus gets on your pc.
