I have 7 5870s. Just put one up for sale as the stock fan died (probably the 3rd or 4th card to have the same issue!) and replacing it with another fan isn't really worth the time/effort/money as with the difficulty drop in 4 weeks the card would only have made about 2-3 Bitcoin I rough estimated.

EDIT 11/11/12:

Here are a bunch of my cards! Descriptions and pictures in the auction links Smiley

Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 5870 (GV-R587UD-1GD)

Well I am still buying.  I think some people are starting to clear out but not me.

What do you want for your cards if you are selling.  (Coinbank is empty now but it won't always be...)

Cool, what is your rationale for buying now? I think ASICs are going to cut into margin quickly... then again if you have free power! Smiley More power to you.

I'm not sure about the fair market value honestly so I put the auction up on eBay. Would you like to make an offer?

I'm crazy.

No really I have a lot of small factors that weigh into my decision:

1. Free power
2. I love tech for tech's sake, I am trying to buy every mining card at least to own for a little while
3. I think these cards will retain value on the gaming market despite the influx
4. Coins generated by the machines I have running now cost me little/nothing --> makes sense to buy more cards with "free money"

**edit**

Forgot to make an offer.

I just paid 21 coins for two 5870 with shipping from Europe with aftermarket coolers and while I like this card (I think its pretty well balanced at cost/performance.) I'd love a slightly lower price.  Not killer though, just keep in mind I *currently* have maybe 5 coins and a couple of those are promised to internet friends already...

2. Yea me too! It is sad to part with our farm Smiley

Cool! Would you be willing to pay in dollars rather than BTC? Smiley I guess not since it defeats point 4! But yea your logic seems tight!

I wonder if we can use donated gpu/cpu time on BOINC charity projects, for tax reduction purposes?

Would be fun.

Any electricity used could be counted towards a 'donation' for tax purposes.

Just got a 5870 for 80€ - either I was just lucky or it indicates that people show already less interest in GPUs...

Well, one 5870 might a bit slim for statistics  Wink

40 degrees, damn.... where do you live? An igloo?

My 2 satoshis on selling GPUs....

If you only want to mine bitcoin, GPUs will lose money as soon as the reward drops (about 3.5 weeks). So the only reason to hold on to your GPUs are for mining alt coins (unless you rig is your heater.) alt coins is risky business all that power consumption could be for nothing when the coin dies several month later. Then again, maybe it's the next big thing and really takes off in a year. It all comes down to whether you like to gamble or not. Smiley I know I do, that's why I'm still building GPU rigs.

For anyone that's interested, I am still buying used GPUs.. I need to fill out the rest of my PCIe slots. Hit me up.

I'm like this too. I like tinkering with technology so I'm going for a watercooled bitcoin (then litecoin) setup in the long run. Just for the hell of it. 5870s are awesome, although now I wonder if I should have gone for 5970s but then I'm not sure if the 1200W PSU I'm using would support 4 x 5970.

PS: this is looking like the next case for this system:

BitFenix Shinobi XL
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811345005

Room for a 3x120mm radiator within the top and removable drive bay area for long cards and a place to put pump/res. Sweet.

Edit: Better pics: http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=103_970&products_id=34455

Very nice but hard to ROI i think to expensive

I just invest in more Mhases the rest is hobby as making expesive rigs is just for fun, but not neccesary i need more coins in my wallets thats all that counts for me. I see lots of reasons that ASIC is a scam but i could be wrong we will see..

I've been contemplating selling the few cards I have running, but they're still profitable, so if/when ASIC's hit and GPU mining goes down the tubes, I'll throw them up on eBay.  I've only got a couple I specifically purchased for mining, so I'm not too worried about taking a beating on price.  But until a time that they're unprofitable to run, I'll keep them going.

I've never had any ROI on all the other computer stuff I've put together in the last 18+ years either.  Grin Granted this machine is a bit more 'special purpose'. If the litecoin/bitcoin ratio holds (big IF), then the GPUs will help pay for it, other than that it is certainly an extravagance. I have ASICs on preorder (from BFL and bASIC) too so we'll see how that plays out.

Yeah, but I certainly don't miss the heat/noise/power cost of that mess.  I had about half those cards running in one room with a 8000 BTU air conditioner running full tilt and the room was still in the low 90's F.

Ouch, yeah I run 4x 7970's all watercooled, I don't necessarily have to deal with the noise, but my room gets hot XD. I live in Houston, and it still feels like Summer here.. Hopefully when the cool air comes in, I can use my rig as a heater Cheesy.

a 5970 only gets like a US dollar a day worth of coins at a modest electric cost. in < 20 days the halving will make it $0.42 a day or $1.20

for those with free electricity. only $36USD/month

and soon as ASIC's 'hit' difficulty will make GPU's obsolete as soon as the next difficulty change (~within two weeks of ASIC's hitting)

in the end 7990 will be the most profitable in terms of electricity cost for mhash

Agreed, once ASIC's hit, GPU's will be worthless for mining.  But it doesn't mean there won't be a market for these old cards.  There's a lot more gamers out there than miners, and they're always looking to pick up an extra card or two if it's a good deal on eBay.

I for one have started to aqquire replacement parts for my gpus, in anticipation of a selloff, but I wont be selling any untill conclusive proof of "live" asics. Even if this means Im mining at a negative profit for a month or two, I feel like it's a risk I want to take.

I wouldn't be surprised if it does, or if it becomes temporarily more profitable to mine than BTC on a per watt basis.  I've been mining LTC for 12 months and it's always been profitable.

If there aren't any "Live" ASIC's, I can't imagine why you'd be running at negative profit since it shouldn't change a whole lot in the next few months unless they hit.

Yeah, my point was that we are all going to know really quick whether there's 'live' ASIC's mining.  Like 2-4 weeks.  Once they hit the difficulty is going to shoot way up really quick, I don't think you'd need to mine at a loss for a few months, because we're going to know a lot faster than that.

Well the way I see this scenario is that the Euro is going down and bitvoin up.. So Im just basicly buying somewhat expensive bitcoins against my electric bill (3months from now)... and under the circumstances I might end up "winning" in the equation. If the profitability of my gpus falls below - (negative) 5$ a day I will be selling them off.
[edit]
With the current exchange rate and difficulty, my gpu earnings will drop a bit below 5$ a day when the block reward gets chopped down.

good plan. don't go in too much debt mining, otherwise its more worth it to sell your hardware and just buy the coins outright

I'm like this too. I like tinkering with technology so I'm going for a watercooled bitcoin (then litecoin) setup in the long run. Just for the hell of it. 5870s are awesome, although now I wonder if I should have gone for 5970s but then I'm not sure if the 1200W PSU I'm using would support 4 x 5970.

PS: this is looking like the next case for this system:

BitFenix Shinobi XL
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811345005

Room for a 3x120mm radiator within the top and removable drive bay area for long cards and a place to put pump/res. Sweet.

Edit: Better pics: http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=103_970&products_id=34455

Don't get that dude... get this... soooo much nicer for water cooling... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133194 - 200mm top fans... with plenty of room for radiators there. Also external slot for hdd / ssd.

If I were to do a WC setup, it'd be in a HAF 932. Not a huge fan of the over-the-top looks (I kinda like that BitFenix for that reason), but it seems to be the very best.
