It is being reported that Westbrook had offers to play for the Sacramento Kings and Washington Wizards but decided to retire instead.  Pretty crazy if you think about it.  Maybe he is worried about his averages or something.  If I were him, I'd be trying to put up as many stats as I can to get my name as high up the lists as possible before I no longer had the opportunity to do so.

I think Westbrook is still better than at least 50% of the players currently in the league, so it's pretty surprising that he chose to retire despite having offers.

The way he retired is disappointing too. No proper announcement. He never got championship ring and even his triple double record could  be broken by Nikola Jokic as early as this coming season. I wonder why he didn't take the same approach as LeBron and keep playing while chasing another ring. yeah If I were him too I'd probably play at least another season or two.

No doubt WB still the best among the other player out there. Its just he's been criticized by his declining performance. He's so durable and have many games played compared on other stars in the league.

He truly deserve to earn recognition on his retirement and I agree with Perkins here.

Quote
Russell Westbrook, not only should he have his jersey retired in Oklahoma City, but he should have a statue out there as well," Perkins said. He also placed Westbrook behind only Shai Gilgeous-Alexander among the greatest players in Thunder history.

Kendrick Perkins Urges Thunder to Build Russell Westbrook a Statue as GM Sam Presti Reacts to Retirement

Westbrook spends 11 season and all his prime years on that team, this is why he deserves those things what Perkins said.

Westbrook should be celebrated by the thunder, he carry the team when all the star players left the team, maybe the Statue is too much but maybe they should retire Westbrook Jersey in my opinion, he dedicated his prime years there no doubt about that without complaining and accepting any player they put him with that is a player who did not even ask them to get this specific player he just play who ever they put him with, they are successful but they were no match for the teams with lots of superstar, WB could have at least get one ring.

I agree with that. He already earned most of his Hall of Fame-level achievements when he was playing with OKC, maybe 90% of it came from his time there.

I just dont understand why OKC could not offer him at least one season so he could finish his career and retire there. Or maybe Westbrook himself doesnt really want to go back to OKC, we dont really know. But Westbrook is definitely a special player for that franchise, and I think he deserves to be honored there.

There was no clear statement from Westbrook or OKC saying they tried to reach an agreement. Since nothing was mentioned, I think its reasonable to assume it probably never happened. At the end of the day, its still business. Teams will sign players who they think can help them, and with OKC being one of the best teams now, maybe they just don't need Westbrook anymore.

But the Thunder did release a statement after his retirement, so its clear that they still value and respect what he did for the franchise.

Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti:

"Russell Westbrook is the ultimate competitor.

His internal belief and unbridled fearlessness helped establish the foundation of our organization from day one in 2008 and he elevated the confidence and inspired our community in every year thereafter.

Russell will be as successful in his life after basketball as he was during his career because his qualities and gifts transfer. His impact on our community is still felt today, and he is beloved for his devotion as much as his talent.

He built a Hall of Fame career not by making statements or simply by breaking records, he did it by showing us all the power of asking one simple question: Why Not?”

Maybe because there is no available spot for him in the rooster, but they should have find a way at least to make Westbrook exit memorable, as we know now the OKC have all the picks and draft that are still available and they could use it to make the rooster stronger, yes they value Westbrook but they did not go extra mile just to make up for Westbrook bring to the team before.
I wish he could have stayed for atleast two years sadly no team show interest that is why the reason he may have retire.

If they really wanted to make room for him, I think it was possible since Westbrook probably would not demand a big contract anymore. A veteran minimum deal would not cost them much. The thing is, OKC just did not seem that interested. They already have a lot of guards, most of them younger and already familiar with how their system works.

And maybe Westbrook's style would not fit the current OKC anymore. So even if bringing him back would have been nice for sentimental reasons, basketball-wise I can understand why they did not do it.

Westbrook spends 11 season and all his prime years on that team, this is why he deserves those things what Perkins said.
Right, although he didn't bring any championship to the old OKC, but still during his prime he was a triple double machine. And we can't blame them as during their run, they have to go against the likes of Golden State. So it's a very difficult task for them as they also meet a prime to be Curry and Klay and Draymond.
---
Hopefully though, if the OKC decided to get him a statue, it should be life like and not the same as when DWade got his form the Heat as the statue didn't give justice to him.
If you will look at the recent statues that have been created, all of them won a title to their past team hence, the statue.
Wade won a title, Dirk won a title, Kobe won a title, Shaq won a title. Just look at this as a factor and answer your question on whether Russ deserves a statue on OKC.

If SGA continues to play like an all-star for a long time, he's even more deserving to have one than Westbrook, and no offense to Westbrook because he had many accolades back when he's in OKC I will never disregard them, but winning a title for a team is a "requirement" for you to have a chance to have a statue. In this case, Westbrook had none. I'll use Dirk as a prime example on this one because he also meet prime Lebron, Wade and Bosh back then and won a title, so Westbrook meeting prime Curry, Klay and Dray isn't a reason for him to have a statue. As for Perkins, he just speaks on what's on his mind, and he doesn't care on whether he's right or wrong. In this case, he knows that Westbrook don't deserves it, but he still talks like he deserves to have one.

I feel sad when I see Westbrook retiring, but it is what it is. I mean he earned much, much money already. I guess it's time for him to have some time for his family.

Russell Westbrook, after 18 seasons in the NBA has retired, he’s 37 years and I’d still he’s one of the most athletic veterans in the league, he plays with all the grit and energy you’d expect from a rookie until his last days in the league, I didn’t think last season was going to be is last, I remember reading some comments about how well he could easily fit into the current Miami Heat roster, but it’s going not going to be.

After 18 NBA seasons, Russell Westbrook has retired. A legendary career: NBA’s top 75, 2017 league MVP, nine-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA, USA Olympic Gold Medalist and the all-time record for triple-doubles.

It was a surprising retirement announcement; I thought he would continue playing. I guess he was uncomfortable with the uncertainty surrounding which team he would play for and decided to announce his retirement. Especially since LeBron James is still playing, it inspires basketball players of that generation to decide to continue playing even as they get older.
In fact, he could still perform at a high level on many teams, I'm sad that Westbrook retired

I don’t think it is that surprising. The last couple of years it has been a question mark whether or not any time was willing to give him a contract. It is a little surprising that he was offered contracts but just decided to retire anyway instead of getting some more stats. Maybe he senses that age is catching up with him.

Anthony Edwards is in our country for his sneaker promotion. As you can see in the picture, he's with the impersonators of other NBA stars. He seems to be enjoying his stay for his promo.

I guess that you can figure out who are their lookalikes. There are the two who are missing and I'm not sure if they're invited or they were but were not able to attend. The two missing are Brunson and Jordan Clarkson lookalikes, you can search and google them and see if you're convinced.  Grin

Im surprise the clippers still offer him a contract, i would select Westbrook over Beal, he has his prime days but injuries stop him for playing higher level but since his return he has not been back to his usual form, clearly if they have look into Westbrook, they have few millions and add a star maybe if there is available in the market, Westbrook has veteran minimum contract so they would get a better one.
Since his injury and been traded he has not become his old self, waste of talent and contract.

Perhaps the Clippers are in desperation mode right now. They've lost Kahwi already although they are still been drag in the case against Leonard. So they might be thinking that offering Beal a mid-level salary could give them some leeway.

And maybe they are thinking that maybe Beal could still give them some numbers. But I don't know, Clippers have so much money and yet they can't find a good player to give them that championship ring. They are really unlucky as they have one of the best teams before with the lobe city starting Chris Paul and Blake. Then years later, having PG and Kahwi but can't play together in one season.

Clippers are going to be trash next season, I dont even see them making the top 10. The moment they let Leonard go they became an ordinary team already.

Im not really blaming them for doing it though, I think it was the right choice since Leonard has been consistently injured, so what they started together they could never really finish. Its not like it was a bad gamble for them, now they are just trying another option but with the current roster I think we already know how far they can go.

They seems to not liking rookie players they are always in a hurry to build a contender team, with that they spend millions to a team that fails to reach the finals or east finals, they should now start rebuilding and capitalized on their picks instead of using it as a trade package for players who will just sit half of the season they fall mid playoffs.
They should also trust the process or they will always have star players who are nearing retirement with big contracts, they did not capitalized in harden, leonard they could have waited other teams who did that gets better results.

He averaged 17.0 PPG, 3.7 APG and 3.3 RPG last season, maybe thats the kind of production they are looking at. And who knows maybe he will be healthier with the Clippers, so its still a gamble. Besides its only for 2 years, not that much compared to giving a player $20 million or more for just one season. They are probably in an experimental stage now, so lets just give it to them. I still don't think they will make the playoffs anyway.

And when they acquire Leonard, he was coming from a championship team that he carried, which is the Raptors. So maybe they thought that bringing Leonard and giving him a lot of money might be the difference and pairing him with Paul George.

But it was a different version of Kahwi then, he was injury prone and can't even have a full season for the Clippers. Although they go and went into the playoff with Playoff George, I can't recall if they go and win in the first round. So for next season, since they are again the rebuilding phase, I don't think that they are going to be a playoff contender.

I guess even before Kawhi was traded to the Raptors he was already injury prone, good thing the Raptors knew how to manage his minutes that's why he was healthy in the playoffs where he was really dangerous. But that did not really happen with the Clippers, so I don't know who we should blame more, Leonard himself or how the Clippers coaching staff managed him.

Well that is true, according to what I read Kawhi missed 22 games in the regular season with the Raptors due to injury or load management, whatever you want to call it. So they really managed him well and kept him ready for the playoffs. Imagine that team was not even among the top favorites in the NBA futures that time, yet they still won the championship. That win against the Sixers was truly unforgettable, especially that shot by Leonard, it was really like a dagger to Embiid.

Rumors going around that the Golden State Warriors are trying to pull off a massive 8 team trade deal to get Steph enough help to make one last run at the finals. I’m not sure how true that rumor is, but the Warriors need to do something before they fall back into their pre-Steph irrelevance.

Steph Curry has been thinking of leaving Warriors for real if those aren't only rumors. Then they had better make some moves to improve the roster. This is really like the worst version of Warriors with Curry I guess.

There was a discussion on the probability of a Curry - Klay Thompson reunion as well. These two were making a great duo in the distant past but now they are both quite old. So I wouldn't have big expectations from that.
