Is this thread from the futur? GPU mining is still profitable.
Yes it is. But we are counting the last weeks here...

I will keep mining, unlike others, I see the big picture and I'm in for the long run... so if I make 1 btc or 20 today, I don't really care...
worst case scenario I'm upping my electricity bill and lowering my heat bill so... maybe in 10 years when I have 10,000 - 15,000 BTC then BTC might be worth more than $10... Smiley

Death, might I inquire as to what you are mining with to have that 10-15K mining number in your head?  That's 1,000 - 1,500 BTC a year.  Assuming absolutely no change in difficulty, that's about 10.5 GH/sec right now and will 21 GH/sec at the next difficulty change when reward drops to 25.  Then 42 GH/second 4 years from there, then 84 GH/sec 4 years from there.  Once again, assuming 0 change in difficulty, which is not going to happen.

The number is not in my head...Wink mind you it was way easier to mine when btc came around and i've been successfull buying and selling also.

I stopped GPU mining a while ago.  The electricity generated from my solar PV panels is worth more when exported rather than used to generate bitcoins.

I am still mining, I just wish the Asics would be released later rather than sooner, perhaps next summer. That way, I could get more of my ROI from my cards and use my rig as a heater in the winter XD.

Could be, he could have 100 GH running for all I know.  Just seems like there's a lot of people around lately that seem to think "My computer can makez me money for free? Sweet!  I'll mine with my Celeron e3300 and I'll be a bajillionaire in 5 years!"

I just hope new (and even some old) folks are taking some time to do a bit of research before they invest too much into mining and really understand the money that can be made vs. how much money they're spending on hardware and power.  Seeing some of the posts, I think there's a lot of confusion/misinformation that people are working off of.

IDK, I did all of my mining gear on an extreme budget, minus my 6970 which was bough for gaming, just serves double duty is all.

For example one rig is:

Code:
Built in Feb2012...

Parts/prices include shipping.
$40 CPU/Motherboard/Ram: ECS 945GCD-M(1.0) Intel Atom 330
Seller also included 2 GB DDR2
Has 1x PciE 16x slot, 1 PciE Slot
Pulls 30 watts at wall idle, no video card

$40 GPU1: 5770, XFX 577A-ZNFC
*Purchased used from a friend who was getting rid of his crossfire setup

$40 GPU2: 5770, XFX 577X-ZNFC
*Purchased used from a friend who was getting rid of his crossfire setup

$13.99 PSU: Corsair CX 430
*Bought ~6 months ago from newegg after rebate. I had a few extra molex to PCIE adaptors for the second card.

$8.98 Pair of 16x to 1x PCIE converters from Amazon, only ended up needing one of them.

Free Case, old beige box mATX compatible, cut a few holes in it to add fans.

$6 OS: BAMT Linux running on a 8 GB Flash Drive

Total: Cost $150.97
MHash: ~380

Picked up a couple 5830s as well for ~$70 (this was back in Feb 2012).

All in all, all the mining gear has already provided me 100% ROI.  If I keep the gear when done, I made cash and got "free" hardware.  I'll likely sell off most of it.  Will probably keep the atom (reuse as a Home server / VPN server) and one of the 5830s for my HTPC (i3-2100) so it can do some decent gaming.
