Seriously.
Do the moderation team have ANY ideas on how to keep this from happening?

Take away the "Thread lock" button. There's a reason why other forums of this size do not offer that option to users.

A thread gets locked because it's ended, or because it's an announcement without comments required. One could always ask a mod to do this. This kind of behavior we see here is the like child screaming at each other and then covering their ears when the reply comes. Ridiculous. Also, this is a forum, not a block. There is no need for a function that enables you of post-->lock, unlock-->post-->lock ect.

Take away the "Thread lock" button. There's a reason why other forums of this size do not offer that option to users. I don't totally love that option because I do think there's value in having service operators be able to make announcement threads which are locked so they don't get derailed. Because you can't filter a thread by poster here, there's no easy way to find information posted by service operators in amongst the multiple trainwrecks which get spawned around the one basic topic. Perhaps we could still allow them the option to have a locked announcement/update thread in IA only if they participate in the discussion threads relevant to those announcements. I do believe that only service operators, the devs, and the mods/admins should be able to open threads in the "Important Announcements" forum. There is no reason why VIP membership alone should grant someone the right to open threads in that forum. The mods already copy the OP of important threads into IA with a link if it's started in another forum. There's no good reason for letting VIPs use IA as their personal soapbox. I'm strongly in favour of taking away the delete button though (maybe set a five minute window in which a post/thread can be deleted).

All I can say is that this is Bitcoin. I don't believe it until I see six confirmations.

The advantage of letting VIPs post in IA is that important posts end up in there much quicker than they would if relying only on mods/admins. Also its a pretty cool perk to offer VIP members, and a pretty good way of encouraging more forum donations. If people abuse their powers by posting rubbish can't this just be dealt with by mods as per usual?

Myrkul opposed to free speech? Surely the world must be about to end Just ask the mods to give them a "Drama Queen" tag In my own forum If I ever get people like these I'm going to give them a "douchebag" tag with their own special corner of the forum that only they can post in, I will also put their offending posts in there too it's a great idea to do this than just ban people which only makes things worse really in my experience.

Hi,
I totally see where you guys are coming from on this, and ordinarily I'd never participate in such idiocy.
Here's how things went down:
AugustoCroppo posted his thread about me. I saw it, laughed at how ridiculous it was, and assumed that anyone else would do the same. I have no idea why he decided to pick a fight with me, but I believe it is because I humiliatingly defeated him in an unrelated debate in another thread.
A few days passed and Croppo opened up the thread. In the brief period the thread was open, someone posted in it saying "Wow I had no idea CharlieContent condoned scamming" or words to that effect. Now I have no idea how anyone could get that impression from the gibberish that Croppo posted, but it gave me pause for thought and I was concerned that the thread might have some effect on my reputation.
I got in touch with Theymos and he told me that there was nothing he could do, if Croppo wanted to open up a thread with a load of slanderous nonsense then it's completely within the forum rules. He told me that I was free to do the same thing if I so wished, on the proviso that I keep everything within the bounds of the thread.
Very amusingly, I found some stuff in Croppo's post history that suggests anti-semetic beliefs, so I decided to make a thread to bring them to the fore. It was the very same tactics he used against me.
AugustoCroppo was fairly upset and he sent me an angry PM. My intention was not revenge, but to use the thread to leverage AugustoCroppo to delete the thread about me. I would then delete mine. My offer was declined, and that is where we stand.
Believe me I would far rather there was some kind of rule to stop this type of bullshit from occurring, but Theymos advised me there wasn't and that my only recourse was to fight fire with fire.
To be fair to Theymos he did suggest that we should both unlock the threads so we could respond to each other, but I declined as I have better things to do than engage with Croppo.
As you can see Croppo makes a bit of a habit of making threads like this (a strange hobby), but you won't see another one from me.
Cheers,
Charlie

More worried about Usagi's use of a locked thread to damage control. Apparently deleting almost all evidence of everything he has ever said or done isn't enough, now he needs a shoutbox to explain how stupid everyone is that questions any of his actions.

Yours was included for completeness sake, it was obvious it was a reply to and parody of crappo's.
