I tried to make a research for my university when I was finishing my studies and had the same problem.
There is not so much research around bitcoin and blockchain from the universities. Mostly, companies that move around fintech has written essays and articles about that which do not make valid sources for a university citation.

I would like to recommend to your research is about how does the bitcoin works and how does it helps the community but of course this is an essay so it's needs to have a good title. Like

• The effect of the bitcoin on the whole economy.

Those are the possible titles you could use but still, you are in the field of programming language I think you just need to give which is related to the comsci which is proving something or making a system with the use of the bitcoin but I think it's too much broad because of the blockchain.

One idea that I could think of is whether Quantum computing will make bitcoin mining much faster, the technology is promising in my opinion because we are currently reaching a plateau in computing speed, and in relation to that no matter how you upgrade your mining rig, it will not matter because we reached the cap.

The best thing to write about bitcoin and blockchain would be to write about why it was created, it had a anarchist background that allowed it to be basically alternative to currencies, sure right now people use fiat to buy bitcoin, sell it for higher price and withdraw more fiat currency and they basically end up becoming richer in fiat or at least aim to be richer in fiat and that is why most people use bitcoin.

However, if you go back to it is roots you will see that the creation process wasn't like this at all, the aim of bitcoin wasn't to peg it to USD or something and then make people rich, the reason why it was created to begin with was to actually earn/spend bitcoin and make it a currency in itself without having to change it to any other currency and just use bitcoin only.

Based on personal experience when making essays, I always start from troubling issues related to the topic I choose. Based on these problems, make a concept or main idea from the solutions offered, this solution can be found by reading literature or interviewing competent resource persons. It also helps you to focus on the purpose of your research or paper. The main key is to read a lot, update about the latest information, and be sensitive to existing problems.
Bitcoin is a fairly new technology, a lot of cool innovations, but also quite controversial to cause pros and cons. From this you can try to analyze it, do we need bitcoin or not, is it profitable or not? that's a pretty complex topic to discuss. Good luck.

Bitcoin is not at all a narrow topic lol. There are many points you can cover such as:
Decentralization.
Inflation rate.
How it led to creation of altcoins.
Working process of bitcoin and about its ledger system.

You can write about blockchain in general and how its implemented to bitcoin. Its real world applications and how it solves payment related problems.  Its encryption technology. You can add many such points to your essay. Bitcoin is such a vast topic that even a book wouldn’t suffice to fit its contents. So, research and write your essay as interesting as bitcoin ecosystem.

essay is not narrow  but its not like a book where you can fit all contents  . he is talking mainly on bitcoin and not blockchain and others that are only consider accesories  . write only points that tackles the main use of btc and its basics , that should do the job .  narrow is the word he use but he didnt know where to start and sounds like he is confuse . this forum is already a place where infos in bitcoin can be found  . not all sites cover the talks on bitcoin on the year 2015

What I have been taught by my teachers is :
An essay can change the way the person perceives a thing , even change the whole world if done right.

I do think when you are going to start writing an essay on *Bitcoins* you need to understand that Media never does Justice to the cryptocurrencies.

If I was in your shoes I would start something like this:
-What is blockchain and when was the idea first conceived?
-How did Mr. Satoshi Use this idea ?
-What is Bitcoins ?
-What are the advantages of using Bitcoins ?
-Why does it give us a break from corruption ?
-How it can completely eradicate the middle man ?
-What are the ways that people can earn using Bitcoins ?
-What are ICO's? How did Bitcoins create a whole new era where we have 100's of cryptocurrencies
-Why does even the Government want to make their own cryptocurrencies? Should they even be called cryptocurrencies?
-Possibility of growth in the future, why we should own at least a little of them ?
