By Byron Kaye and Colin Packham
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian police raided the Sydney home and office on Wednesday of a man named by Wired magazine as the probable creator of bitcoin and holder of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of the cryptocurrency, Reuters witnesses said.
More than a dozen federal police officers entered a house registered on the electoral roll to Craig Steven Wright, whom Wired outed as the likely real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous figure that first released bitcoin's code in 2009.
Locksmiths broke open the door of the property, in a suburb on Sydney's north shore. When asked what they were doing, one officer told a Reuters reporter they were "clearing the house".
A reporter who approached an office listed as the location of two of Wright's registered businesses, DeMorgan Ltd and Panopticrypt Pty Ltd, in another Sydney suburb, was turned away by police with one officer saying: "There's an operation going on at the moment, I can't answer any questions." Several police officers could be seen speaking with workers inside.
The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has long been a mystery that journalists and bitcoin enthusiasts have tried to unravel.
The police raids in Australia came hours after Wired magazine and technology website Gizmodo published articles saying that their investigations showed Wright, an entrepreneur and academic, was most probably the secretive bitcoin creator.
Wright is the chief executive of Australian-registered DeMorgan Ltd, which he describes on his Linkedin page as "a pre-IPO Australian listed company focused on alternative currency".
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said in a statement that the officers' "presence at Mr. Wright's property is not associated with the media reporting overnight about bitcoins".
The AFP referred all inquiries about the raids to the Australian Tax Office, which said it could not comment on "any individual's or entity's tax affairs" due to legal confidentiality.
Emails to various addresses listed for Wright did not receive a reply.
The Wired and Gizmodo investigations were based on leaked emails, documents and web archives, including what was said to be a transcript of a meeting between Wright and Australian tax officials.
"Either Wright invented bitcoin, or he's a brilliant hoaxer who very badly wants us to believe he did," Wired said.
Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the documents and transcripts quoted in the reports.

If that man is really a Satoshi then he should accept fact that he is no longer anonymous and he failed at protect his private life. If he was honest he should once and for all clear all misunderstandings.
Show us that proof -  Original PGP Key associated with Satoshi.

Satoshi isn't that stuck-up, nor vain. That's what this guy is. What motive does Satoshi have to reveal himself at this moment? Satoshi has kept himself secret, and he really doesn't need to be noticed right now.

You could have posted this in the other million threads about the subject but anyway, theres no conclusive proof this guy is satoshi and if he is and they find the coins they are not going to be able to do anything with them since they are encrypted anyway which is hilarious.

This is a huge hoax. Until we get mathematical proof of satoshi, we ain't going to budge. However when the news came and the price spiked, I had to fasten my seat belt. Stuff was getting pretty tense.

So, it's very unfortunate for this guy that he's getting his ass busted by police because a magazine identified him as a guy he's probably not.  Sheesh.  I wonder what he's being accused of by the police?  Surely being satoshi nakamoto isn't a crime in australia.

Absolutely not, but I have been wrong before.

What's going to happen to the bitcoin world if Satoshi's identity does become known?

If the original Backside walkaround can prove to me they are the old owner of this account, I can update the email address to the email address of their choosing.
Backside walkaround has lost access to their account as they used someone else's email address to sign up, and the owner of the email address got tired of random email notifications from this site after a few months and reset the password.

Do you have an opinion on this? Do you think it's him?

Rumor has it that Steven has had trouble with taxes prior to this news. It stands to reason that if this article comes out claiming that Steven has millions in Bitcoin (just speculation of course) that the Aussie Feds would stop by to "search for this bitcoin"...not realizing entirely what they're looking for.

Its only slightly plausible because of the Tulip Fund. Still, I think that everybody just wants to find Satoshi so badly they're clouding their judgement.

If this guy is satoshi and has 1 million btc and is avoiding
paying his taxes on other business then I would be shocked.
Would take a real moron to try and save a few bucks avoiding
tax and risk a mountain of cash.

What's going to happen to the bitcoin world if Satoshi's identity does become known?

i'm more worried about the fate of his one million coins if those coins get seized and put on an auction as usual, and then maybe dumped

they are more secure if they are preserved by satoshi himself

Its too hard to say that he is satoshi , satoshi is a pseudo-name and no people really exit with that name.

Almost certainly a hoax. I haven't seen anything presented so far that would be believable and everything leaked so far seems like a set-up and hasn't been verified. Seems like whoever leaked this stuff fabricated it for whatever reasons. Not sure why he would want to do it personally as all it is going to do is draw unwanted attention and suspicion on him (which isn't going to do him any good after his arrest and especially if he owes his gov money).
