I`m really tight on money building my first rig. And it will be on sempron 140, with cheap ram and hdd.
And I don`t know yet, will I get 4x 5830 or 5850. I googled, and 5830 use 171wt and 5850 150wt.

How to count how much energy mobo and hdd needs? I realize that gpus need 150x4 wt, but no idea how much energy other stuff need.

I believe the sempron 140 uses 45w.

If it's worth knowing I have two 5830's running on foxconn a7das with 1 hd and a disk drive consuming 367wph

a 750 80+ gold would be the lowest I'd go personally on that one, and get a decent brand so it doesn't catch on fire or something

here are some good links for psu reviews

http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/psu_power_supplies/
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Review_Cat&recatnum=13

also here is a rough estimate calculator for a "system"

You might have a challenge finding either one of those cards in stock anywhere unless you want to pay double what they were going for a month ago.  5850's went out of stock everywhere about 2 weeks ago and 5830's dried up tonight...

These Raidmax PSUs have 4 12v rails and are gold rated. I was looking at them myself for a mining rig.

850w: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152043

1000w: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152044

Opinions please.

the 1000w got a "pass" from HarcOCP but wasn't impressive - read at least the last page: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/02/23/raidmax_rx1000ae_1000w_power_supply_review/9

Damn so I could probably one two cards off it maybe 3 depending on the cards. With an AMD semperon I might have a chance with it. I'll have to do more looking around & research into Gold rated systems I guess.

For a mining rig it doesn't really matter. You're going to be running the PSU and GPUs 100% (probably OC'd) 24/7. Your main concern is a power supply that has sufficient amperage, and is rated to put out continuous power at high temps in the range that you need it. The cards are going to be getting f'd up anyway, a small amount of ripple really makes little difference to these set ups.

I mean, obviously the best quality is better, but a pass means that the PSU is solid enough to do its job, and that's what you need for a mining rig.
