I was wondering if there was a plugin that make website viewers mine with their CPU for the website owners. Such a thing exists ? This could be interesting to add this to some websites and bring their creator a source of income and could permit them to don't display ads. This everyone is happy.

I remember something that was similar to that exist but because the visitors are using to many flash coming from those sites that uses this plugin they reported it or ban it that could be the reason why I am not seeing this kind of stuff anymore but you can mine using only your browser with minergate used to do that but earning is very slow using that method

That's why putting it on a big website is better. If a lot people come on the website this could be profitable. I was not aware that users were able to report or ban a plugin. So according to you it used to exist but it has been since banned ?

What kind of legal problem could they have Huh ? Using hardware of the users is prohibited ? I know that told this way it could seem fishy but I didn't know this. I don't see it badly if it is said to the users and if they have a kind of compensation, like no ads.

You would earn almost nothing.

A PC has a hash rate of say 0.05 GHz.  The current network hash rate is 670,000,000 GHz.  So 1 PC represents one thousand millionth of the network.  And every month it gets worse.   Over a year a PC mining continuously would be lucky to make a few cents. PC mining died in 2011.

Also people only stay on one web site for a few seconds.  So even if thousands of people visited your super web site every second you will still make almost nothing.

Yes and no.. there is a ming plugin for Wordpress and various other API type things, but they will come nowhere near the level of income that you are making off of ads.

I doubt it would be a problem if you specify it in your terms for visitors to agree and allow your users to close the mining process. However, don't expect many visitors to use it/match your ad profit ever since they are so inefficient.

something like that would be illegal / unmoral... unless u state it on the site where people would click a button...

if you dont allow people to opt out of it then i think it would be illegal just like a virus / worm or something alike

but if you think about it there are alot of people and if u have something installed in the background of a website and it runs in the back ground using 1 core of a cpu and there are alot of visiters then it would install to run in background when site is off and computer is always on and every viewer of the site

so if you think about it theres god knows how many people in the world billions if i remember right

so even 1000th of the worlds population visits the site thats alot of processing power kinda like a botnet

This kind of mining concept existed in 2010 and 2011 and had the final nail put in it's coffin with the coming of SHA-256 ASICs.  CPUs shouldn't be going anywhere near SHA-256.

This question hasn't appeared for ages but now comes up every few weeks again due to the value of bitcoin rising.

Answer: It's illegal, it's immoral, and it's ineffectual. Even 1 million miners unwittingly mining with a CPU miner built into your browser wouldn't make as much bitcoin as a 50 dollar dedicated USB miner does - that amount being a denomination so small that no pool would ever pay it out to you.
