I would tell them that it's a currency "Just like dollar, euro" or whatever you use in your country, but it's not issued by a goverment, or any particular entity, but by the people that run the network which is the miners, cannot be counterfeited, and can be sent across the entire planet without anyone's permission.

I would explain that it was a digital currency no different from any other currency. Tell them it could be a good investment but as like any investment there are risks. If they live in big cities more than likely there are places that accept it no different from normal money. Don't confuse them too much with it just keep it simple

Explain to them briefly the price history of bitcoin over the past years and I bet you that most people will be interested.

After you get their interest you can goo in deeper about all the uses and possiblities, but their attention will be much higher after you explain the potential profits.

Take the btc paper, and give to read. Some times could be the best answer to all doubts.

"If you don't understand how it works doesn't mean it doesn't work!"

Something like this, but stop joking
Make a brief summary of what you think btc could improve...
like "privacy", "banking system" and so on... I think every one of us noted a peculiarity on btc itself and know what can make the difference, and could help the "common user".

I've tried like dozen techniques to try to get people into crypto. I've tried showing plewbs A.Antonopoulos senate meeting. I've tried sending them free bitcoin, I've tried showing them all the websites associated with bitcoin, I've even tried to explain the core protocol with the help of the whitepaper.
Last person who is interested in bitcoin, I just told him that he will shit himself when he finds out what bitcoin is. He's now looking to find the cash to buy some.
I think that introducing bitcoin to right people helps a lot. Most people just don't give a fuck.

Good suggestions here, kind of.  I have a hard time giving people any sort of idea why bitcoin is better than cash.  If anyone here can tell me how I can suggest to people why they should exchange their fiat for bitcoin I'd love to hear it.  Unless you're speculating or sending funds to another country I really don't see the advantage of it.  Most people don't care if they're anonymous--look at how many suckers use facebook and all that other stuff.

Maybe if you'd tell them, that bitcoin is a global currency that's deflationary in the long run. It's competing with euro and dollar and whatnot and a single unit is already 400 times stronger than a dollar. Also lighten them on fiat currencies overall where debt based currencies have all failed because of the trust issues that we run into.
http://georgewashington2.blogspot.com.ee/2011/08/average-life-expectancy-for-fiat.html That study was based on 775 currencies. Then tell them, that all the currencies on earth are based on debt to put things into scale. Then tell them about the recent hyperinflation in Argentina and other countries. I could write more but I'm kind of repeating myself with all of this. However people usually never notice.

You're right, because day-to-day fiat functions very well.  People get paid in fiat and pay rent in fiat and everything else.  Why would I suggest that someone exchange their relatively stable currency for a digital one whose volatility can be breathtaking and whose legal status is subject to the whims of government?  And a currency that offers none of the protections that banks offer?

These are the questions I can't seem to answer myself.

The trend of bitcoin is surely an upward one and for sure people don't like to lose 20% of their value overnight, but the trend is going upward, so even if people lose out in the short term, they'll gain a lot more in the long run. You can pay your rent and everything with the services that the bitcoin network offers, but it has some sort of a learning curve, so it's not meant for everyone at the moment. In my opinion there are too many businesses tied to the network, so if a government want's to make it illegal, they will most likely get sued. Kind of paradoxical if you ask me.
However bank offers little to no protection when it's failing. If you look at how much money the banks owe, then most of them are currently failing in my opinion.

I think we need a huge disruption in the current monetary system for people to open their eyes. The 2007 market crash wasn't big enough.

To explain bitcoin to people that didn't know anything about this kind of money its better to talk without technical words, speak about bitcoin as normal money, that you can use to buy and sell things. And explain that you can store them on a wallet app on their phone. If they have real interest on bitcoins, you will have time to explain more things about. But first easy things.

show them by example

1. get them to download a webwallet and send them some bits

2. ask them how long did it take to receive the payment from you after you said 'its sent'

3a. if they are day trade investors show them an exchange, get them to deposit that funds and make a trade
3b. if they are asset/antique/rare mineral hoarders (long term investors) show them how to get the private key and tell them to hold onto it for a year as thats
the most important thing
3c. if they are just a consumer (they just buy things from shops), find a local retailer that accepts bitcoin and get them to buy something with it.

4. ask them, did they need to hand over passport information to set up the webwallet, did they need to wait 1-3 business days to get verified, did they need to wait for delivery of a debit card and pin number after getting set up.. no, no, no

5. then show them how many retailers accept it where its useful, show them a few bloomberg videos (financial news) where they are praising bitcoin. show them the price of bitcoin.

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

There is a lot of information out there to explain the basics of bitcoin for you and your friends. I think it is unnecessary opening new threads just to ask for questions widely answered previously.
