the only way that i have found to be decent, especially if you are planning on keeping your seed and/or private keys for a long time, is engraving them on a metal.

But this is much harder to hide than a piece of paper that you would cover with a thin foil of plastic so it's waterproof protected.

Yes, a piece of metal is more resistant but you still need to keep it safe from burglary and thieves.

Excellent idea. If I was a thief that's precisely the first place I'd search. Don't tell me your password is 123456789, now?

Paper is still your best bet. Or a metal, like pooya87 suggested. I'd write down my seed on a sheet of paper using an encoding pattern that only I understand, if I were you. And then maybe I'd frame said sheet of paper and hang in the middle of my hallway like you did, because it wouldn't matter anymore.

home invaders dont spend hours sat at your computer desk riffling through your emails and documents.. they pull out the cabling and take the whole computer.. then spend time in their own safe location to look at your data.

i suggest putting the seed somewhere else.. like behind a family portrait of the ugliest family members you have (something no home invader will want)

I think the best idea is to put it in a fake mustard, nutella or whatever you want jar. When I meant fake I meant that it is emmpty, with the glass painted to make think that this is full. You can also hide your bucks there !

If the thieves have all parts of the seed it doesn't matter if they need to solve a pattern to crack it. It will at most slow them from getting the key, but any non random substitution is easily cracked nowadays.

I store my keys on paper and USB sticks (encrypted wallet.dat). Those are securely locked away so nobody can touch or find them.

I wouldn't store my keys in a computer case, if the thieves suspect that you have a wallet.dat on there, they might just take the computer with them. It would probably be safer to have it on a piece of paper in plain sight, as they might think it is just a pile of random papers (don't throw them out).

I just have it written on a diary but its written in a way that only I could understand/decipher it and of-course the home I live in is pretty secure, so I am not worried about intruders.

You can also keep a dictionary then write down the page number and the serial no. of where the words are listed on that page and then write down those numbers somewhere which has literally no value to a thief.

Most chiefs wouldn't realize a computer case can contain something valuable inside to be honest, they don't care about some computer materials, they are going to go for fiat, gold, and search any vaults hiding behind pictures or closets, but certainly they aren't going to go after the latest video cards or something because they can't tell value out of that, unless the chiefs happen to be nerds.

I'd hide my seed on a paper and then put the paper under the bed, much safer because thief won't be looking under your bed when you're sleeping at night
Or better, put it in Bank's safes

Under the bed is even worse than inside the computer case. Yeah it's safe when you're sleeping at night but what about the rest of the time?

I was thinking more in a way that you can bend over easily plasticized paper several times and tuck it in somewhere more easily than a little steel plate for example.

Than again I guess that we are nitpicking here. We won't have this problem with physical theft of private keys for years to come until bitcoin doesn't become really huge.

As long as nobody knows you are holding a large amount of bitcoins in your house, than it is not going to be much of a problem.

But if you tell everybody that you store 100 bitcoin on a piece of paper in your house, and bitcoin is worth 1000 or more, it is almost guaranteed that you will get a few visitors every now and then.

Probably the safest way in the future will be to split up the key into 4 or something parts and store each part at a different location (not in one house ofcourse). You won't need it often anyway if you use a hardware wallet for instance.

If I were you , I would have engraved it on a heavy metal and put it at the air-con ventilation space with or without any cover (no difference) and push it a little further back so it wouldn't be seen even if someone uses flash lights and point at the cover door to look from the pores of vent.

I store nothing in digital format, so you can stop searching for it on my computer. I do not trust electronic media because it can be corrupted or hacked. I store my private keys and

seed in different locations on physical media. It is virtually indestructible and would last for centuries. {Hint : Stone}

It is also hidden in plain sight, but undetectable to anyone without the knowledge to decipher it's puzzle and it's use. I know the formula to it's secret and left clues to the family, if

something happens to me.

Not now, for sure, but if you die without telling anyone where to find your seed, people will buy the house and start repairs. Construction workers have been known to find gold in old houses every now and then. Who knows that in the next century they won't find bitcoin seeds instead

That made me think of how I keep my seed  I was installing the HD wallet and when the seed/passphrase was shown I thought: How can I record it and be sure of not losing it? then I read a message in the installation window that said something like "do not take a pic of this or something like that".

Then I went "Oh yes, a pic! such great idea" and made a pic of the screen loooooool.

This looks good, until you want to sell some of it, or buy something with it with them... they you have to break your wall just to get some Bitcoins out. Sure I understand you mean for cold storage, but you never know when you will need some, so I would leave them more accessible.
