Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

It's killing me that people still try to position Bitcoin as a digital currency. It's a digital commodity with Fiat transferability guys... By positioning it as a currency you put bitcoin at risk to have the same fate as metal backed money, if not worse considering that we know in advance its total availability through mining. It's too easy to manipulate commodity currencies, speculators have decades, if not centuries of experience doing this.
Bitcoin needs to be classified as a digital commodity which can be used as a proxy for meta-trade between fiat currencies AND as a LONG investment vehicle. That would result in bitcoin having a bottom out value due to its use for pure transfer and a growth value due to speculation/investment/savings.
