i think google 'dun goofed' and recrawled old websites.. maybe google found the articles had been updated is some minimal way (spelling mistake or update of website code) that tricked google into thinking it was a new article.

to me this is just a failure on googles part

I'll accept your assessment, albeit I honestly was leaning toward a consorted effort by the entities somehow adjusting their time- slash daystamps for the ranking juice, hence starting this thread to see if I'm correct or in error in my assessment.

Either Google is at fault or the system is being gamed. That's the gist of this thread.
