Heh.  Forking is easy.  Just change anything important, and you will no longer be compatible with bitcoin.

If you want to be sure right from the beginning, just throw out the checkpoints and change the genesis hash.

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish, but creating an alternate blockchain (forking bitcoin) is extremely easy.  The difficult part is convincing anybody else to use your forked coin.

You can't merge-mine without running your foocoin code. ::shrugs::   the pool miner slaves don't but they don't have to no matter what you do.

I'd generally advise against creating a fork— unless you have some really novel ideas to try out as no one really wants or needs more of the same. If you do have novel ideas the forking itself will be the smallest part of the work.

If you do fork be sure to change the network bytes otherwise you'll be quite sad.

If you are asking for a tutorial for making a fork.... then you probably shouldn't make a fork in the first place.

Heh.  Forking is easy.  Just change anything important, and you will no longer be compatible with bitcoin.

What you described is not really simple forking. It's creating an alternative currency, additionally to forking.
Forking is what I did, but i did not create new currency with that.
