QUAD r9 270x cards, i think I mined scrypt for a few months before the ASICS took over, then mined X11/X13 for a bit until converting it to a dual-270x (in crossfire) gaming rig and selling one GPU.

Didnt turn a profit, but i think I paid ~$1200, made $200 selling a card, and mined about $400 in coins, which basically just gave me a well-priced gaming rig. However, Im already about $50 mined in ethereum, so its still valuable for mining

24" PCI-E cables with 16AWG wires and stripped ends - great for server PSU mods, best prices https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=563461
No longer a wannabe - now an ASIC owner!

Using my GTX 760 to mine Decred at around 430 MH/s (overclocked). Smiley

Maybe when I get the money I can invest in an AMD card just for fun.
