Hi there, just joined the forum. Have been researching Bitcoin for the last three days. Please pardon me if this is not the right thread of posting this. But I really need some help. Again I may be very late to the party. But I attended a bitcoin session in India yesterday. The organisers are promising 4.4% returns on BTC every month. So you 'invest' 1 BTC and get 0.1 BTC paid out every month. The 'contract' is for 18 months so effectively you earn 1.8 BTC for each of your BTC. They also have some referral schemes etc where you get 5% of BTC when someone else signs up and so on. Typical Multi Level Marketing Kind of stuff. I have bought my first BTC 3 days ago and am excited about the stuff. But quite confused about whether to trust anyone with my BTC. Because I believe a BTC in your wallet is yours... And as soon as it leaves that...you have nothing. I have searched internet for an hour now the posts here are quite informative seem to make sense (even to me who is technically challenged-Thank You) any advise would be great from anyone who has some knowledge please. Also is there a reliable cloudmining website which I can refer to? The organisers above are referring to be using F2pool, is there a way to join/invest in F2pool directly? Again apologies in advance for a random post.

Highly likely a cloudmining scam. F2Pool is a mining pool, the only way to "invest" in it , is by buying a few miners and mining.

Most of the time it's just a matter of common sense. Scammers are pretty obvious and if a deal seems too good to be true then it probably is.

Someone said it elsewhere: the hardcore usage of "sir" and/or "bro" seems to be done by scammers.

So according to your logic, all noobs = scammers. That can't be right. I am new here. And I intend buying/selling as much bitcoin as I can + other currencies...whenever possible.
I have no intention of posting on topics that dont interest me, just so that I can drive up my post count, niether am I willing to wait for weeks or months before dealing. We all have to start somewhere. All old posters where once newbies.
The Admin/Older posters should find a way of vetting newbies. Maybe make it a rule that noobs go 1st, and also make escrows a must until one reaches a certain level of trust. If an escrow is enforced, fees should be at the barest minimum to encourage rather than scare off potential users.
Even at this, there are no gaurantees. Ive had experiences in other forums where trusted members turned rougue.Just upped and left with their clients cash. So my advice will be to deal with caution. A little bit of common sense helps. Yes and maybe luck. sometimes you are unlucky to be a victim, but caution will help minimize your loss.
My main argument is that it is wrong to genaralize newbies and lump us all into 1 category. It is akin to saying all muslims are terrorists, that jews are greedy or that black people are lazy. Everyone should be given a chance.
On the flip side you do have some very valid points. Infact most of your points are true. I just dont agree with the generalization. I'l also suggest that after naming and shaming scammers...they should be banned.their ip/mac addresses logged and prevent from using the site. at least make it harder for them to sign up again. Yes I know its difficult and near impossible. But maybe if those who benefit from this website through their exchanges and trades contribute a little something periodically...it will go a long way to helping police the site.
just my 2 cents
I couldn't agree with you more.

This or something similar should be pinned to the digital goods forum, God knows how many people get scammed there.

I was wanting to buy an Antminer S7 4.7TH/s. I've got contacted by BTC909 who's willing to sell me one. But after reading this post. I have my reservations in dealing with him, since, like me, he's also a newbie. Anyone can advise me on how I can purchase an Antminer?
what trading options do I have?
Thanks for the advise.

Thanks for the advise. Use a well known and trusted escrow service (like - for instance - OgNasty, Blazed or PsychoticBoy)... But - please - first check the user carefully to be sure you have the right one (status, trust, previous posts et cetera). A popular way of scamming seems to be a newby (yes, noobs again, sorry... but true) who assumes a name similar to a trusted member's name...
