So I'm noticing the prices of the S3s and S5s dropping significantly. I have 2 S3s and was thinking about adding an S5, but I have a few questions.
1. The S5 is as loud as a small vacuum, correct?
2. I live in Texas where it's easily 100-105F every day from June-Sept/Oct and never drops below 80F at night during the summer. I would want to put the S5 in the garage, which gets even hotter. Would this be ok or would the S5 not be able to operate at such temps??

The S5 is hot and loud. Might look and see if you can find a DB rating, but "small vacuum" is hard to quantify that into a number. Would I mine in 100F .... no I think heat is going to be a pain unless you have some really good cooling. Add a few S5's to a area that is already 100+ F ... .you are getting very hot.

If the area is well aerated or open-ish, he might be able to get away with it by adding a second fan, and maybe he could also try to use box fans to blow air through transversely. Its hard to tell what will really do it, considering how the heatsink just throw air everywhere. The print modded enclosure would probably also do it. If not, underclock.. but that would kinda suck. But if all else fail, its a good failsafe.

Perhaps a small portable vacuum. It shouldn't be a lot louder than your S3s are. 2. Downclock it a lot. I ran mine during an Iowa summer without A/C, often seeing 90s, just had to downclock them some to avoid overheating and massive number of hardware errors. They stock clock at 350 Mhz, you should be fine and might even be a bit overkill running them at 300 Mhz (they'll go at least somewhat lower than that if needed).

I ran a dozen S5's mounted to exhaust out of window inside a shed, the other window was open to let fresh air in. Wind tunnel shed! They ran great, even when ambient temps outside broke 100F. Loud! Did it work? Yeah. Do it again? Yeah, but it seemed wrong, very wrong..

But still sounds expensive to cool down and your getting under clocked rates. Most likely going to a hosting center would make more sense. If I was dealing with 100F+ I know I would be looking for hosting center and run gear not under clocked.

Yeah at this heat you're going to be pouring a lot more money in to keep things cool then what you will be making. If you want to mine for fun, set up some usb sticks and sell the S5 to buy them. And I have had those hot summer day's. I ran all though last summer. Normally 70-80ish.... i had to resort to a LOT of CFM's of air it varied but always was around 12k+ watts worth of gear. The day's it hit 90... I hated it and watched the heck out of my gear luckily it was a "mild" summer. But if your talking lot's of gear you can see how I struggled and anwser was more CFM's, got 2 much bigger fan's then I thought I would need. And eventually put in a professional gable fan as regular home gable fan's even higher end was not putting enough exhaust out. - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1020826.0And it's hard on your fan's even to run that long I had 1 of my 2 big fan's end up failing luckily within warranty. But it happened during winter.... and lowes is very seasonal. I ended up trading one of them in for a 12k CFM fan that pushes a heck of a lot of air. I can tell anyone out there winter is much funner then summer mining.

So I just picked up an S5 to run in hot southern California and have a few fan questions to tag onto this thread: Did you use that fan on your S5, Phil? Did you run it as push only, or push/pull? How did it perform? push and pull system with a couple of scythe fans and you'll be fine, I run mine in my office in an apartment and it isn't too noticeable, i am getting 32db if I remember correctly.
Do you have links for the fans you used? 32db sounds too good to be true, I would like to hear more about your fans and the operating temps you saw.

but it's dryer there i have family out there , i lived there for three years before moving back to Maryland were 90 to 100 degrees feels worse here. even 80 degree days we need the AC on there on 80 degree days you kind of don't I run last summer all summer long 3 to 5 S5 every day in my basement and my power cost, highest bill was maybe 450 that was believe or not in SEP and OCT . when we really needed the AC on for some reason latly the hottest time of year is in SEP or OCT . none of my S5 ever went over 58 C . but i used two fans the rpms from the UI were 2500 to 2700 per fan day or nite.I never overclock when it's hot, so your temps shouldn't be that much different if you use some of the advice fans these guys give they do work . and use two fans . Don't forget in Texas you heat is dry heat and that helps run these better then were i live. and it can be hotter or feel hotter here due to Humidity. and use a Air Cooler over ac out there .

Any particular reason you are using 2 different fans? Which one is push and which one is pull? I tend to lean more to the overclock side of the fence than underclock, but I'll see how this unit is when it arrives and I may UC a little if I have to. I OC'd my S3+ a little, and OC'd my S1 when I used it.

I've just finished an enclosure for 2 S5's (Thermaltake Core X5 with 2 Titanium power supplies). They're running a 140mm Noctua 3,000rpm fan in the front (running at 2,400 rpm at 88% power) and a SilverStone FHP-141 v.2 (on Performance mode, 2,000 rpm) in the rear (to reduce noise). They've been running about an hour overclocked at 375M (1,240 GH/s avg. each), it's about 80 degrees F. in the room. They're running at about 61-62 degrees C. 1 HW error each (0.0001%). Both pulling about 1,280 watts on 230v (add around 25watts for 120v) (includes 6 additional case fans and a fan controller, the temp. probe shows it's about 30 degrees C in the case). These have been slightly modded with heatsinks added to the boards and they're in acrylic enclosures.

80 degrees in your room? Wow. Fans must be pretty loud even on performance mode. I run my 1 S5 in the garage at 85F though, and I can't afford to overclock at all. It's a miracle your S5 isn't putting out more HW errors than that.

It's actually pretty quiet. I built this setup to put in my office. That's why the 3,000 rpm 140mm fans (with 140mm to 120mm fan adapter) are downclocked to 2,400 rpm (at 88% power) to make it workable to work in the office with it running. 2 HW errors on each after 1.5 hours and they've gone up 1 degree C. From 350M (default, 1,155 GH/s ea. and 1,195 watts for both) to 375M adds about 170 GH/s (85 GH/s ea.) for both (which adds about 85watts for both).

Just understand that heat is the enemy to electronics. ESPECIALLY cheaply made Chinese electronics. Now, decide if it's worth the gamble to you. S3's are almost indestructible - S5's not so much. Don't attempt to overclock and have some headroom left in your power supplies. Or it will cost you by far more than you will ever make!
Thanks.

I looked up the old thread from the guy who made 3D print models for fan ducts and upper/lower case covers for the S5. I downloaded his files and will probably, at the very least, have the top and bottom plates printed up (about $40-$50 total). Makes a lot of sense to me to confine the airflow to the inside of the unit rather than letting it escape out the top and bottom. I'm not sold on his fan ducts, though, mostly because all the printing places I've looked at want $60-$80 just for printing that one part! There's also a guy selling acrylic side panels and includes a bottom panel on ebay, definitely less expensive than ordering the custom 3D printed parts, but probably not as effective.

I ran about 7KW of gear in my garage last summer. Temps hit 115 degrees or so regularly in the peak of the summer. I did have to downclock the couple S5s I had to around 275-300mhz if I remember right to keep them cool enough with the fan at full fan speed (stock fan). Afterwards when it got cold again one S5 was never able to OC very well without going xxx on one blade. Oh well!
S1/S3 were never as temp sensitive, and the SP20 could be downvolted/downclocked to survive just fine.

What did you do for cooling? I know some push some gear pretty hard but ambient of 115 degrees is getting up there. Yes some miners can run in much hotter environment's then they advertise. But I sure would not risk it. S3's were tanks I have heard of very hot temps. Even still a S3 and S5 are two completely different beats.

Thought I would chime in as I printed off these ducts/covers many months ago, using our office printer I have done some testing with a combination of the stock fan, and 2 Scythe fans. I have tried with and without the Ducts also. Long story short, the best set-up is to only use the stock fan in Push. Adding 1 Scythe to Pull, actually made things worse. And using the 2 Scythes in Push/Pull wasn't anywhere near as effective as the stock! Atleast 5 degrees in the difference if I can remember right. The Top/Bottom covers are great, and will probably make a noticeable difference. As for the Ducts, because I'm only using the Stock fan to push, I only have the front Duct mounted. It does improve cooling quite a bit! If the noise of the stock fan really is a killer, then you can get away with the 2 Scythes in Push/Pull, and also use both front and rear ducts.

Thought I would chime in as I printed off these ducts/covers many months ago, using our office printer I have a friend with a 3D printer and he's making the ducts for me. I got the S5 over the weekend and hooked it up in my laundry room. It's loud, but it's not as loud as I expected from everything I read. I used some tin foil to cover the bottom of the unit and then some more tin foil at the back to duct most of the hot air out my dryer vent. The laundry room did get a few degrees warmer, but I think once I get the ducts on and get all the hot air to leave through the vent it will be better. I'll try a couple different fans to see what it does for noise, but stock fan is something I can live with and the box runs around 50*C which is great.
