Barack Obama’s reportedly impending visit to the United Kingdom will make the country’s exit from the European Union more likely, Ted Cruz told reporters on Sunday.

“President Obama, if anything his campaigning against [Britain leaving] will make it more likely that England will pull out of the EU,” said the Texas senator and Republican presidential candidate, who was campaigning in North Carolina ahead of Tuesday’s primary.

The Independent on Sunday reported this weekend that Obama will travel to the UK in April, as part of a trip already including Germany, to lend his support to the campaign against the so-called “Brexit”. The British prime minister, David Cameron, wants Britain to stay in the European Union. The referendum on the question will take place on 23 June.

The question of an intervention by Obama has been raised before: in February, Tennessee senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee, suggested Obama would “reach out” to British voters.

Declining to say if he thought the UK leaving the EU would harm US national security, Cruz pegged his argument on a critique of US foreign policy that he gives when out on the stump.

He argued that Obama had hurt “our alliances” and “harmed our friendships” around the world, and that “our enemies have learned this president is not a credible threat for anything”.

I don't think so. It means that the US is going through a lot of hard bargaining to make a free trade agreement with the EU, and that it doesn't want to have to make another agreement only with the UK. Brexit means isolation, from Europe, but also from US.

He may as well make us the 51st state instead. What Britain needs is more guns and Mexicans.

Hehe.

Saying that you don't trust someone because of their behavior is completely valid.

It is the 51st state. Or maybe the 52nd, after Israel. At any rate Europe is pretty much vassal territory for the United States and has been from WW2. Germany certainly is totally in their pocket.

Barrack Obama's visit will have no impact on people voting to stay in the EU, he should keep his mouth shut or he's likely to make it worse. 51st state my ass, this is exactly why we need Europe - so we don't get swallowed up by the heartless corporatism that runs America. The only problem with America's arrogance of "being number one" is you get lazy and don't think anyone does better than you.

It really doesn't, countries managed trade just fine back in the day without the aid of gigantic empires, why people keep using this bullshit line I'll never know, you don't need a giant organisation to do the job of one transport and two people signing a piece of paper. People are deliberately trying to make the EU seem more necessary than it actually is and besides, it's showing that it is absolutely useless at organising itlsef and achieving it's goals so why bother?

Why Obama is so much concerned about the Brexit? He should first take care of the mess which he helped to create during the past 8-years. The Brits know what is best for them, and they should be allowed to make a choice. Just because Obama is in love with Merkel, that doesn't mean that he can ask Cameron to polish her shoes.

The UK used to want a gigantic empire, that was the Commonwealth. The EU is probably the last chance for the UK if it wants to keep on having a voice on the world scene. No, frankly, who cares about little britain? If the UK leaves the EU, it will be much more difficult for british exporters to sell their goods in Europe, this is the only thing which should matter. The pound would sink, the Spanish would invade Gibraltar, of course the british would rule everything in their smallish rainy islands, but there would not be much left to rule. Note that businesses want to stay in EU.
